Go to a Party School if I love the Place?

My dad and my grandmother went to texas tech. I love the school. It's a great fit for me. I will probably get into honors and will double major in math and computer science. I have major scholarship money from tech (basically full ride), the opportunity to do research for them as a high school senior this summer, and get my masters done for free. But the problem is Tech is a party school and has a bad reputation among some people. I am not a party person AT ALL, I have medical conditions that prevent me from drinking, and am allergic to multiple foods, and am not social. Tech meets my needs and a lot of schools don't. The job placement rates at tech for computer science and math are REALLY high and the average starting salary is high too. Do I go to a party school that I love or settle and go to a school with a better reputation?

Go to the school! The education will be what you make of it, and in most cases no one truly cares or will be deeply saddened if you choose not to drink and party. Don’t settle. Tech is a great school with a solid reputation and just about every school has an aspect of “party” to it! If you love it, go there and experience it for 4 of the best years! You won’t be as happy going to a school that you didn’t love as much knowing you could’ve been at Tech.

News Flash!

Nearly every college in the US is a party school. when you get 18-22yo kids together, you’re going to have a lot of partying…unless you go to a bible college or BYU.

Probably the other schools you are considering also have a decent/heavy party-aspect. (what are they?)

BUT…at every school there will be kids like you as well. Get busy joining clubs that interest you and finding like-minded kids.

I wouldn’t worry, there are plenty of colleges that are very good and have varying degrees of party school reputation. You said yourself the job placement in your area is very good so who exactly are ‘some people’ who think it has a bad reputation and do those people really matter if they are not the employers? I’d put party school way down the list of things to be concerned about.

Even UIUC and UT-Austin could be called “party schools.” It’s definitely not going to screw over your future unless you forget to study and work hard.

Congrats! Sounds like you have found a great school for you. Agree that many, many Us have party reps, deservedly or nor and you can still get a great education there, which employers obviously recognize with those great placement numbers. ;)

I agree. Congratulations. Go to TX Tech. Every school has partiers and every school will have people who don’t party. TX Tech is large enough that you should be able to find people who share your interests and values. The fields of math and computer science in particular will likely get serious students. And join clubs/activities that you enjoy to meet other people. And see if there is an honors dorm or perhaps a wellness dorm.

While big universities can have big parties, they will also have plenty of students who are not so much into the party scene.
