Several times, mainly at lunch, I get into discussions about the nature of God (or lack thereof) and evolution, orginis of the universe, etc.
What's y'all's thoughts?

I think that either there is no God or the FSM created everything.

I think that either there is no God or the FSM created everything.

This is probably a stupid question, but what's FSM?

Yeah, I have similar conversations at lunch as well. :) Very interesting.

Yeah, what IS fsm?

I'm an atheist to the core. For me, there is no God. There never was, and there never will be. I don't believe fully in evolution either, though. For now, it's just the more palatable choice as opposed to intelligent design.

FSM = flying spaghetti monster. Wiki' it.

I worship Richard Dawkins.

I dunno, I'm more of a worshipper of the Invisible Pink Unicorn. ;P

I'm an agnostic. I believe in a higher power, sorta, but not one defined by any organized religion. For we all know, hey, it could by FSM or IPU :D

No God. Yipee.

there is no god.

You mean you think there is no God. You don't have evidence to support that theory.

I sometimes question my religion. I don't feel good about it, but it's just always there. I mean, how can one man create everything there is in the whole entire universe? Who created God? Who was there before him?

Many, many questions. Unfortunately, no one knows the answers to them.

i believe in a higher power, namely God, Jesus. Christianity. I think my belief is supported by the turn of events that have happened to me personally but it can always be my conscience playing tricks on me. like who knows? but i think i will stick to my belief until someone can disprove it.

I believe in a higher power that created everything around me. But don't believe in Christianity to me Jesus was more like a philosopher than the Son of God.

I was raised in a Christian household, went to a non-denominational Christian primary/middle school, and am going to a Catholic high school.

However, thanks to a combination of personal experience, AP Euro, and (oh, the irony) Religion class, I am now a firm believer that we just don't (and possibly can't) know.

Which makes me agnostic.

I'd like to minor (?) in theological studies or a similar field, just because I hate not knowing. I know there's so much more to Christianity than the average practitioner knows, and I think to be able to make a reasonable decision, I need to do the right research.

I also believe in the theory of evolution as far as the general idea goes. It's pretty much established in the scientific fields...

Oh my gosh! I didn't know that more than say, eight people in the world knew about FSMism! Pastafarians UNITE!

You mean you think there is no God. You don't have evidence to support that theory.

Since I was the one who typed it, it's kind of implied that it's my opinion

my mom thinks that god caused the big bang that created the universe, that He was the one that caused evolution, etc...if you think about it, the Big Bang theory does sound kind of stupid...BANG!

well a lot of people take comfort in God, and as a spiritual being. He gives a lot of hope to people and so i'm not going to go against that. i usually dont get too involved into these "Is God Real?" arguments because, hey, what do I really know. i'm not one of those atheists or God-supporters who believely passionately and devotedly to their cause because i don't think there is enough evidence of either thought. those people just give me a headache.

I personally think that god doesn't exist.

I have IluvA's mother's view. I think that science is a very integral and important part of our lives, but that spirtiuality and believing is also needed. And you don't need to have all the answers, that's what believing is about. Truthfully I feel sad for people who don't believe in anything, because even I myself question god a lot, but still think that it is important to believe in something.

I do think that if god didn't want us to question, he wouldn't have allowed us to, but he did in hopes that we would find our way back to him, even with all of our knowledge.

Two questions:

Why do you feel sad for people who don't believe in anything? I know plenty of people who are perfectly content believing whatever they would like to believe.

And how exactly do you believe questioning God will eventually lead us back to him?

In my eyes they will never be whole people, there will always be something missing, it's just how I view them. I'm not saying they are bad people, I just feel sad for them.

and I meant it in the sense that it is a test, to see how strong our faith is.

Well, then am I right in saying that you're sad for them because of your beliefs? I mean, there's not even a reason for you to be sad. The only person that comes off any worse for their beliefs is you; they could be the happiest thing in the world.

But you implied ("with all of our knowledge") that the questioning would lead us directly back to God, through logic, knowledge, science, whatever. Or do you advocate what you just said, that he wants us to return to him, even if it goes against what we did find?

God is part of civilization...yes its awful that people kill each other for religious beliefs, but God has also made a lot of wonderful spiritual bonds...i know that sounds cheesy but i'm always hearing about these miracle stories and about how people thought God was part of it...it's just really sweet and nice, you know?
