I went to college for about 2 maybe 3 weeks this past spring, I quit because I was feeling homesick and my roommate was the worst. I officially withdrew from the university but they’re saying I owe them over $5,000 and I don’t know why? I want to go back to college soon and I don’t have any credits to transfer only Ws so I don’t know if I should tell them about my previous college or not
(Mature serious answers only please)
You have to let other colleges know you attended this school. There’s a clearing house that lists all the colleges students attend, so they can easily find out. If students lie on apps, colleges can rescind acceptances and degrees, so just be honest.
Call the school and find out why you owe money. Do you have papers showing you formally withdrew? Check their withdrawal policy to make sure you followed all the steps.
Your outstanding bill will cause you problems either now (preventing you from enrolling in your impending college) or later, when your college freezes you due to the unpaid bill to the prior college. Like austin said, it’s imperative that you clear it up. Maybe it’s a clerical error. Maybe it’s fees due to your leaving their housing after the start of classes. Don’t sweep it under the rug. Investigate. Ask questions nicely. See if the prior school can shed light on exactly how the charges accrued and if anything is amiss or can be done to eliminate/reduce them. Good luck and don’t get discouraged. Get help from parents/others if needed. This might take some hard work to clear up.
If you withdrew after refund dates, then yes you will owe money. Even if withdraw you can owe partial fees. You will have to take care of this before you can enroll at another college. And all colleges will need transcripts from the previous school even if they are just W’s, the school will not know what is on it unless they get it. They need to be sure you weren’t dismissed for academic dishonesty etc, as well.
If you are able to go to a new school, be sure to read the student handbook so you will understand the consequences of your actions.
You attended classes and withdrew after the drop/add date (i am guessing), perhaps lived in a dorm and ate some food, so you used some of their services that you owe them for. It is great that you did the withdrawal by the rules so you don’t have “F’s” like other posters. You definitely have to tell the new school, and need to have reasons why you are ready this time. Like now you are applying to a school closer to home, and you know to use the counseling center and to request a roommate change through the housing office if you have an issue.
Thank you all for your answers, they were really helpful
