Hey, I just went to Preview, and I signed for MAC 2312 (Calc II) in the fall. I took AP Calculus AB this year, and I am positive I got a 5. I definitely got at least a 4.

I feel relatively strongly that with my current math background that I should handle MAC 2312 just fine; what do you think? Does anyone have experience with this transition?

My friend in mechanical engineering got a 3 on the AP Calc AB exam and went into Calc 2 her first semester. I think she got an A but she definitely worked her tail off. Also, she took Calc 3 the second semester and also struggled but managed an A. I assume since you’ve done better you shouldn’t struggle as much, but expect a bit of a struggle just because you are transitioning and it is first sem., I’d say.

Vertigo220h, do you suggest going into Chem 2 if I’m expecting a 5 or at least a 4 in AP Chem?

Engineerjw, I’ve been worrying about my situation recently…I took AP Calculus AB this May as well and am very confident I passed. So they let you sign up for Calc 2, that’s good news. Did they let you sign up for Physics 1 w/ Calculus as well? If so, that’d put my worries to rest.

My S got a 5 on AP Calc AB and went ahead and took Calc 1. He had a kind of off kilter teacher who was hard to get used to. He is glad that he took Calc 1, just because it was his first semester and it is kind of hard to adjust to campus life, classes, expectations, etc. He found Calc 2 this past semester, spring 2011, to be more difficult and theoretical. It was definitely way more of a challenge! He ended up with A’s in both, but he thinks that in his case, with lots of socializing in the dorm first semester and getting used to UF as well as the ball-buster classs CHM 2045, he was better off taking Calc 1 during his first semester at UF, rather than the more difficult and challenging Calc 2 (he got a D or F on one of the tests and studied hard for it). It depends on you, though. If you plan on studying tons and not much socializing…go for Calc 2. It is doable.

@gengster - sure, but if I were you (depending on if you’re on pre-health vs engineering) I’d retake CHM2045, even if it’s super boring for you. Why? Inflates GPA (this is if you’re pre-health). If you’re engineering then it might be better to get started on the rest of your classes. If not, use it as a grade boost.

@Vertigo220h, thank you so much for your advise. Sadly, I’m BOTH engineering major and pre-health, so I guess I’ll go with chm2045 then.
