I applied to hkust for civil enginnering on late dec , but itz been a long time already and the online application status is still ‘under consideration’. Does it take that long to get their reply ??

@arnav-yh… sarthak has stated everything that matters…since your results come out only later its quite possible that they give you a conditional offer depending on places remaining in each course…bear in mind that some courses have higher requirement than others…
what did you apply for??
I am an Indian national too but i live in England and did the local “A Level” syllabus in high school…
NUS probably will have higher requirements than HKUST…my cousins tell me that one requires greater than 90% in that…As for Indian students…last year it seems there were 7 ,this year should be more…maybe 10-15…No problems there…
Good luck

@Moosa4-its been awfully long in your case and it is an anomaly…you should email them asap and ask why its taking so long…good luck

yea i know that NUS generally asks for 92 to 95 % and its very tough to get admission there. But is it the same with HKUST or are they a bit lenient as far the marks are concerned?? Do they take only 10 - 15 indians every year or can it go a bit higher…??? I thought that not many know about this univ. but now it seems that there are a lot of indian students who are appying for HKUST. As far as my school is concerned i still dont no anybody else who is applying for this…whereas there are lots who are applying for NUS and NTU. I have applied for mech. engn… Is it really tough getting admis there or do i still stand any chance? And do u know anybody from india who is studying at HKUST and what marks did he get in his board exams???

Moosa4: First of all cool name! And now to answer your Q, its highly unlikely that it will take soo long without being contacted even once! Soo email them asap, asking them if everything is ok with your application and by when should you expect to receive a decision …

arnav3103: Even I have applied to NUS soo you have competition mate but fortunately for you I’m not much of a competition ! Oh and I have applied for Mechanical Engineering too, I think they accept 10-15 Indians under the normal application and more under the Singapore Airlines Scholarship Examination thing…
For Mech Eng at HKUST I have been asked to get >30 points with a 5 in Maths which is extremely easy, but they also offered me full scholarship which is if I get >38 points, I did not have to take an interview unlike most of the other applicants, so i’m guessing it shouldn’t be so diff for you too, however, because I did IB and applied as an expat like Anand they tend to give us preference as applicants, so it might be a bit more difficult for you…
For NUS Mech Eng is more competitive than it is at HKUST because of the enormous no. of applicants, so there it’ll be more difficult…

@arnav-i meant i expect 10-15 Indian students in HKUST joining this year…last year was 7 i am told…
As sarthak said NUS takes far more students than that…
I have founnd out that every department has different criteria for admitting students…
since your results come out only later, its likely they will give you a conditional offer if you satisfy the basic requirements.I think UST takes about 60 or so undergrads for mech eng every year so you have a good chance but it all depends if they are places remaining…
A university like HKUST doesnt need to compromise as they get quality applicants for every course…
one of the guys in this forum said he got an offer from HKUST for BBA…it was 80% for admission and 90% for scholarship…
that was for business, should be higher for engineering (hope so atleast) …
what are you expecting? 85 above should be a reasonable estimate

10-15 Indians joining HKUST and also lots of Pakistanis! Its going to be fun And the good thing is me and Anand already know majority of, if not all of, the International students joining HKUST :)

yes indeed…i have a feeling me and sarthak are going to end up being good buddies…em lets see…
the more the merrier

Anand78: I think we definitely will be good buddies unless we like the same girl ! In which case there shall be a Tequila shots competition and the one standing at the end will get the girl !!

hahaha…lets hope not mate

hahaha… Well I would probably let you take the girl and drink all the tequila while you are gone !! :P

10-15 Indians/Paks going to HKUST?!!! Damn! I’m gonna have a hard time!

hey people !!! whats up??? i just got accepted to HKUST for Electrical Engineering and im Pakistani =D … its awesome to see so many people excited about it… im SOOOOOOOOOOO in love with the place already! it’ll be awesome !..

p.s. why isnt there a group on FB for the HKUST class of 2014 or soemthing …i hate it how all my friends have joined their networks and all ! … any idea if there is one cos i couldnt find it!

@msaleh: Hey! congrats on the offer!
Yes, there is actually an FB group called “Future Internationl students of HKUST” or somthin like that…
So you’re going there for sure?

for sure 100%… no doubt about it

Sarthak and anand and everyone else…
I just got acceted to HKUST in Mechanical Engineering…i just have a lil doubt in my mind…will they really accept me or not??? Can we make any appeal after the final decisions are made by the university…
And 10-15 Indians/paks…that will be real tough for me…i guess so…i hope they take me in …

lol… i got admission at B electronic Eng at hkust:P

do they tell about scholarships later( got an e-mail today)

sarthak, anand and others brothers,

after reading your conversations, i felt motivated enough to ask u people to help me take a vital decision. i have got confirmed offer for mech eng. in HKUST which i have already accepted so as to keep my choices open. but the problem is that i have NOT been offered any schlorarship at all :(. i scored 93% in class 10th cbse exam and 91% in class 12th cbse exam.+ i have done 40 hours of community service). I had sent my documents quite late( april 1st week) , could this be the reason pf denial to a scholarship? is there any way to appeal for a scholarship now ( because the expenses are on the higher side for me and i will have to take loan to support my expenses)? so firstly should i still consider HKUST??

also pl. inform me whether studying in HKUST and not in a indian uni would give me any definite edge for my post grad studies ( i want to aim for ivys!!) as i have also been offered admission in Manipal university in india (indians would be knowing it) which is sort of reputed here and the expenses are literally one tenth!! so pl.inform me why i shouldnt join this particular indian uni??

Given a choice i would like to come to HKUST and fortunately my parents are more than wiling to do so. but Would spending a lot ( i take it as an investment) , working hard, and studying in HKUST would pay off greater in future As in studying in HKUST would help me significantly in getting admission in good us unis?

I am in a deep dilemma and therefore would be really thankful if u all could guide me and help me choose the rite uni.

PS: what do u think are my chances of getting through NUS??

thanks all for reading my long story!! hope to see u soon in HK!! :))

Thanks thanks thanks

evrybody in general takes loans to cover their education…its nothing major…
scholarships are hard to get unless you are an Ib student…
discuss with your parents and take a wise decision …ultimately they should decide
