Sarthak: I think I am going to apply for engineering,i will appy next year.

dibbasatya: Oh thats good… I’m am planning on finishing my Undergrad in Mechanical Engineering, and then doing a Masters and phd in Ergonomics, unless I decide to do MBA after MEng… I’m planning on doing my postgrad from UCB or Stanford… lets c how it goes…

michiganfall: Okie… However if you are from Michigan, guessing from your name, then look into U of Mich! I applied this year and got in too, but its too far and expensive for an undergrad degree so decided not to go… Any idea what branch of Engineering you are interested in? If not try thinking what are in Physics, Maths, Bio and Chemistry interest you the most… You could even do Engineering Management or Engineering Psychology!

I’ve decided to major in either electrical engineering or industrial engineering.congrats on Michigan!!!

Nice good luck for your future. Warm California sun will be waiting for you.

michiganfall: Oh thats cool… Industrial Engineering is really interesting ! Its more of Logistics than engineering though… If you’r the extroverted out-going person who likes to be in command in things and goes to McDonalds wondering how it all functions behind the counter, how the luggage system at airports work, then Industrial Engineering is what you should be doing!

dibbasatya: haha… thanks! I dont know why, but i’m really keen on going to UCB atleast once in my lifetime! lol… it just feels like the right place for me, even though I have never actually been on campus I dunno Stanford and Harvard sound like these control freak Universities, like “Its Stanford you better behave properly”, whereas UCB sounds like “I’m proud to represent UCB!” hahaha… dont even knw if tht even makes sense lol …

It is weird and funny how you have personalized the Universities. But UCB is a wonderful school arguably one of the very best in the world. But in terms of prestige though it does not quite match up to Stanford or Harvard. But you are here aiming at great schools, be a little cautious. Just an advice. Though good luck.

dibbasatya: haha… yeah its very difficult too! Lots of criteria had to be considered
Yeah I always believe in being realistic when it comes to plans and aims, but so far all my grades and ex-curricular activities have been supporting of my aim… But I will have to work harder to just secure it maybe…

Work smarter not always harder.

haha… I pronounce tht to be the quote of the day!
Hving said tht, with the amount of partying and socializing we expats do in Shanghai, the only way we have survive IB is by working smartly! it is also true that I hardly work, but I dont work hard as yet, hence I need to work harder … :)

I found these blogs online about exchange students who went to HKUST, thought might be helpful for people looking for opinions on the Uni:
[HKUST - Clearwater Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong Travel Blog](http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/lilywong/hkust/1188657600/tpod.html)

[Handelshyskolen BI - Amira in Hong Kong](http://www.bi.no/BI-Startpage2/Programmes/Bachelor-programmes/Bachelor-of-Business-Administration20/Exchange-20/Amira-on-exchange-in-Hong-Kong/)

HKUST expense estimates for International undergrad students:
- 80,000 Hk$ : Tuition fee
- ~15,000 Hk$ : Housing fee
- ~55,000 Hk$ : Miscellaneous expenditure [Normally aboutc150-200 Hk$/day] [varying according to how often you eat out, travel, shop and party…]

So overall an estimate of about 150,000-160,000 as your upper limit is a good range…

HKU is more expensive (tuition is more than HKUST)

Um from Bangladesh appeared for Edexcel GCE AS level (Grade-11) in may 2009 with 4 subs and achieved around an average of 94% marks and will be sitting for A2 (grade 12) this june. I have gud ECA’s too. The deadline for HKUST application is still on, till 31st march. Do I have a chance of getting into HKUST with a scholarship if i apply now?

Can any 1 pls tell me, wat should i do now? Damn um LATE and its freaking me out :-(

Muntasir: You basically have answered your question yourself, just can’t realize the answer is simple:
“Apply” There is no harm in applying! Instead of wasting time, trying to figure out what people think, just go ahead with it and apply, if you get in, which I think you should with that percentage and decent ECAs, then think about the next step, whether you can afford it without a scholarship, whether your family will allow you to go or not, whether you wanna go or not… And if you dont make it, then at least you tried … Just keep a safety option as well, like what if things don’t work out in favor of HKUST, which Uni can you definitely go to/have already been accepted by.

Lemme knw if you have more Q’s

Oh and I think you can def get a scholarship with those marks, it all just boils down to how much scholarship money HKUST has left…

**EVERYONE: We have started a facebook group by the name of “Future HKUST International Students”, for all those who are almost certain they will be joining HKUST this Fall 2010… Please join if you wanna make contacts before actually stepping foot into University! will make your life soo much easier and its good to know people from different programs in the same Uni !
However, if you arn’t certain that you’ll be joining HKUST, please don’t join the group yet…

:)

I dint no abt this uni before and applied on 28th march 2010…but i think its very late!!! What are my chances of getting through??? i got 87 % in my x cbse exams and my xii results will be out by mid of may…i really want to study in HKUST…pls temme wat all i hav to send them and what is the cutoff for international students…acc to the site its 75 % but i think its much higher than that…

@arnav-you should check the website for sending the required documents…
it is possible for them to give you a conditional offer…what course did you apply for?? depends on places left
its not really late.
best of luck

arnav3103:
They will ask you to send them your official transcript, copy of certificates, and few other things which are specific from person to person depending on where you are from, check on the website it has it all…
As for the offer, as Anand said it all comes dwn to what course you are applying to… Some are more competitive than the others… The cut-off is 75% online but they accept applicants only in the range of 85-95% as its very competitive. Having said that, in HKUST, unlike in India, they also look at your CCAs… Give more info on what you applied for and your stats etc, so that we can weigh your chances

thank u sarthak and anand for your prompt replies…
I was in national cadet corps for about 3 years and hav cleared the a level exam of ncc. But the certificate hasnt even arrived…thanks to slow and ****ty Indian government… procedures… also i used to play a lot of lawn tennis and would call myself an above avg player. Also i hav a good hold in german language which i learnt in my school itself and would like to improve it further if i get an opportunity to go to HKUST. and i hope to get good grades in my 12th board exams…i also wanted to know that how many indian students are they willing to take?? What are my chances??? I hav also applied for NTU and NUS…

The marks are certainly not an issue in your case I guess… The ncc certificate is amazing, would certainly look great! But for sports and languages, don’t put them on unless you have won certificates for them, otherwise its gives the impression that you are trying to come up with stuff that you have done…
As far as the Indians are concerned, I have already heard a lot of them being accepted to HKUST and other Hk Universities, so thats a relief for you in the sense that they appreciate our education system and students, but maybe the competition is way too difficult due to the same reason and they have already made a lot of offers so nothing can be said for sure…
To be more specific about the CCAs, put down inter-school sports or any position that you have been appointed/nominated for, for languages put down any recognition or marks that you have got…
I am an Indian applicant but I’m taking the IBs so I dont know what is a competitive score for CBSEs, even Anand didnt do CBSE… but I did ICSCE in Xth and got 95.6, so around 85-90 is a decent estimate for acceptance i guess… for IB generally a total score 38 or above generates adequate chances for a definite admission offer, so i’m guessing it should be around 87% for CBSE as an equivalent…
