Could NMSFs who have been accepted to UMN please post whether you have been accepted into honors and/or received the Gold Scholar Award (scholarship) and possibly also something about your timeline dates apply/admit/got award/honors and stats/profile. I'm curious on behalf of others about how many of these they hold back for later in the application process and whether they award more of these as people withdraw their apps later in the cycle. So any current students with the award, please chime in. And current students, how many of you received extra scholarships to stack on Gold Scholar and when did they come? Thanks

I'll start. D applied 8/31, got award 10/8, got accepted&honors 10/23 on tracker.
OOS WI, 4.0 UW/35/2280 (both one sitting)/8APs counting sr. year/math thru calcBC/ ECs-mostly lots of music, several small things like humane society, trail restoration

Anyone??? They give 125 of these scholarships, must be others on CC who have received them, even if not all have been awarded…It’s a NMF scholarship. Award is conditional on reaching that status. $10-12K/yr.

Celeste…the last couple of years, scholarship notifications started being received the first week of December…another parent and I have been in contact about this…neither one of our top stats kids (not nmf) have received any scholarship information, but both were accepted to honors. I just assumed they’re working on a different timeline this year.

celeste…Our D1 is a sophomore at UMinn, so I’m not sure if her timeline will help you or not but here it is. She received her admissions acceptance to CBS in early November, scholarship notification around Dec 10th-ish (IIRC) and Honors invite via snail-mail in either very late December or early January.

She as a NMF with very high stats (3.99UW/4.2W/36 ACT/2400 SAT) and did receive some additional stacked merit scholarships on top of the Gold Scholar that brought her up to a near full-ride. I don’t know how much of an effect the NMF status had on her receiving the additional merit money versus strictly stat-based, so it’s hard to guess what an incoming NMF this year might hope to receive. I do know of some high stat non-NMF students who weren’t offered as much merit money as I would’ve expected based on our experience 2 years ago, so it may just be a “wait and see” thing unfortunately.

If you’re willing, please post again once your scholarship offer does come through so folks might be able to guage what kind of premium UMinn does or doesn’t put on NMF status.

Thanks so much for the info. It is helpful. I suppose timelines may vary from year to year, but it’s a good starting point. I’ll def post if she gets anything more. We had a great visit there. They really made us feel welcome. I’m realizing, the more places we check out, whether by actual visits or just catalog and website cruising, that the honors programs vary a lot. I was especially impressed with Minnesota’s. The number of different math sequences they run is staggering. Not that that necessarily correlates with a great experience, but Serge Rudaz, the honor program director, really sold me on the place. She attended several classes. The variety of freshman seminars and the quirky nature of the subjects they cover is refreshing. She sat in a Finnish class (H is Finnish.)Finnish is a pretty rare offering in US universities, 7 or 8 places have it. Serge told us honors kids don’t get priority scheduling but assured me that the counselors there help kids smooth out difficulties with scheduling. Have you found that to be true? Can you actually get into these fun classes? We walked campus end-to-end and tried out the campus buses, which seemed very efficient. Does your D use buses? H always rode his bike there, even in the worst weather, because he felt the buses were too slow, though that was many years ago. They just added a performance-based music BA last year, to accommodate the many students, like my D, who want to do music performance as a 2nd major. 10th grade S came along with us and took pics of the brand new stadium and the light rail line construction.

Ok, I see you answered my question about the bus in an older post on another thread, just went back and reread. Your D likes to walk. Hard to keep track of everything I learn. Thanks again.

celeste…Our D1 does like to walk when staying on the East/West Bank campuses, but has used the campus buses this year when heading over to the St Paul campus for a class there. No issues so far with the buses, but she did build her schedule to allow plenty of time when switching campuses to give her some leeway.

Regarding the scheduling, I was a little nervous as well about Honors students not getting priority scheduling but (and I hesitate to say this out loud  ) so far she hasn’t had any real issues. She had to scramble a little bit with a last minute additional Honors requirement they added for the current semester, and she was initially only able to get a Physics class this coming semester that conflicted with her campus job. All the other sections were showing “full” even though she scheduled fairly early in the process, but they created another section within a day or so and she was able to move everything around fairly easily. There has been a lot of turnover with the CBS Honors advisors so she hasn’t really had a constant “go to person” available to her. I’m not sure how it would’ve worked out if she really needed someone, but based on everything else we’ve experienced with UMinn I’m fairly certain any issues would’ve been resolved. The scheduling tools also seem to keep a good track of whether the student’s planned courses will meet all the graduation requirements (Themes, Writing, etc.). She did sign the 4 year graduation agreement that the U offers, so even if it had become an issue I’m confident the U would’ve made some arrangements to get her the class she needed. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a link to the agreement.

So far she’s only had one “fun” elective she wasn’t able to get into because it was full. It was something to do with the paranormal (D1 and Mrs Wolverine are addicted to Ghost Hunters and all those similar shows ) so there’s bound to be some of those limited number of section type classes that will fill up quickly. She’s taken a Greek and Roman Mythology class that she loved, and is taking a Psychology class this coming semester.

Lots of exciting stuff going on with the light rail expansion, football team returning to semi-respectability, hockey and basketball teams nationally ranked, etc. It’s a good time to be a Gopher!!

MY daughter was accepted as an OOS to Carlson honors ( GPA 3.9 and SAT M-760, Cr-690, W-740= 2190) in Nov/2011. She received her honors and scholarship notification in Dec early January. I remember receiving a questionnaire about there maybe merit scholarships that she would be eligible for. She received the Gold, Benson and one other with a grand total to about 10k/year. The U loves smart out of staters, and they give these students tons of money to come to the U. Be patient!

I don’t know if there is more than one gold scholarship award. The one my daughter received is for NMF and is 10-12K/yr for 4 years. The extra 2k/yr is dependent on financial need. She also received a one-time $1700 research stipend. I was told that the gold used to be $7500/yr and was increased in the past yr or two. Also, someone told me the Bentson is 5-7K/yr. Haven’t received that (yet??) so not sure about it.j

Yes, the award letter came in early October, two weeks before she had been admitted on application tracker. It’s not a mistake, when we visited not long ago we had meetings with head of honors program, the woman who looks after the NMSFs, and also a recruiter in admissions who brought an honors student with her for lunch. That’s why I started this thread, have a friend whose NMSF son hasn’t heard anything about scholarships/honors yet and trying to determine how common it is that awards are sent out so early.

S2 is a soph and is in state, but I remember being concerned about the merit scholarships since it seemed like everyone else had received notification. He ended up getting at total of $15,500, but I don’t think we heard until February. The best part is that half way through fresh year, they sent us a letter that they will be increasing his Benston scholarship for jr and sr year.
