I just got my acceptance letter and I'm wondering when we get the decisions about the scholarships/honors program? On the application it said there were no extra applications for those

Priority deadline for scholarships is 12/15, so I wouldn’t expect a lot of action before then.

One of last year’s threads on Scholarships:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-minnesota-twin-cities/1043698-scholarships.html?highlight=scholarships

It looks like some students received scholarship offers in early December last year, but others didn’t until January or February. Re Honors, some were accepted within a few weeks of acceptance to the university last year, and that seems to be true again this year; my D and sujormik’s D received Honors notification recently, but others accepted much later.

plumney1 said : “That is because many of the admitted students who are honors eligible use U of M as a backup school, and end up going elsewhere due to various factors. So when those spots open, the honors spots trickle down.”

A lot of the scholarship offers came out in the first few weeks of December last year. If I remember correctly, D1 got hers right around the 6th or 7th of December (roughly 3-4 weeks after her acceptance).

Regarding Honors, I believe they told us Honors invitations are handled by the individual colleges (CBS, CLA, CSE, etc.) so the timing may vary based on what college you were accepted into. Some of the accepted students had a notification on their Application Tracker page within a few days of acceptance and later on received a letter via snail mail. D1 got the snail mail letter somewhere around late December or early January if I remember correctly, but it took quite a while before it showed up on her Application Tracker page. There didn’t seem to be any hard and fast rule for how or when notifications went out, so don’t fret too much if others get notified earlier than you.

BTW, you can still send in your Housing App once it becomes active and request Honors housing in Middlebrook if that’s what you’d prefer, even if you haven’t received an Honors invite yet. Your prioritization date will still be set by the date your Housing App is received, even if Honors notification doesn’t come until later.

Thanks for reminding me, Wolverine, I meant to post that the housing application is now available; it was activated on the 11th, so we made the $25 deposit that day in order to establish a priority date for housing!

Wolverine–How does your D like the University of Minnesota? Is Middlebrook working out well for her? My S has been admitted, and will probably attend (pending scholarship notification). He is a studious guy, and I’m wondering about the atmosphere of Middlebrook.

momtheboss…D1 absolutely loves being at U of Minn (except for the struggles of the football team which is driving her crazy!!). She opted for the Honors housing in Middlebrook and hasn’t regretted her decision whatsoever. There have been a few times when her floor has been a little too “active” for her tastes when she’s had a test to study for, but that’s only occurred on a onesy-twosy basis. From what she’s said, it’s unfair to pigeon-hole the atmosphere in any of the dorms. In general, Middlebrook may be somewhat more quiet than the Superblock dorms because of the Honors housing but it’s not like Middlebrook is a tomb nor are the Superblock dorms always like Animal House.

She hasn’t had any issue with the walk across the Washington street bridge from the West Bank to the East Bank. All but one of her classes is on the East Bank this semester, but when she does have to cross in between classes she has made it with a few minutes to spare. As winter sets in she may try out the Campus bus, but as of now plans to continue walking. She loves the exercise!!

She is trying out several different clubs associated with CBS as well as a group associated with her Greek Mythology elective. She’s attended events sponsored by the Bentson scholarship she received, Honors events, a football game, and a few dorm related picnics, etc. She recently interviewed for a spot as a campus guide/greeter (not sure of the exact title) that work the campus tours and orientations. We’re thrilled with how happy she is and how involved she’s gotten. All in all…we couldn’t be happier with her choice and would recommend the U to anyone. Good Luck to your S!!

I just got my scholarship today! It only took about a week from the time that I was admitted to both the College of Liberal Arts and the Honors Program.

seancarpenter, congrats! What scholarships are they sending out already? That’s such great news!

momtheboss - S2’s U of MN experiences, scholarships, etc. pretty much mirror those of Wolverine’s D. (They are even on the same floor at Middlebrook - it seems like most of the kids on his floor are Benston scholars) There is a great group of kids in his wing and he doesn’t mind the walk across the bridge. He was just awarded a freshman research grant and I overheard him telling Grandma at Thanksgiving that he was very happy with his decision to attend Minnesota. His study groups for Honor’s Calc and Physics meet right at Middlebrook.

Hey! I just got my offer today (I am OOS) for Gold National of 5K, Gold Scholar of 10K, and Bentson Family of 5K. This is so exciting!

S also got his today. Gold Scholar ($10,000- assuming he makes NMF), Bentson ($5,000), and Undergrad Research ($1,700). We are in-state. It is even better than I had hoped. Yay!

Thank you Kajon and Wolverine for relaying your students’ experiences. It looks like my S will be joining them next year. He will be in CSE.

Congrats to all those who already received their scholarship offers, and Good Luck to those still waiting to hear!!

momtheboss…Great news on the scholarship offer for your S!! We couldn’t be happier with D1’s decision to attend the U, and I’m sure your S will be a great addition if he chooses to attend.

Plus…the Gophers will be carrying a 1-game winning streak into next football season!! It keeps getting better and better!!

i got my acceptance pretty quickly (a few weeks) after my app was submitted. i think i received the Honors college notification 1-2 weeks ago, and today i received my info about scholarships. I’m OOS. I got the Gold National, Bentson, Gold Scholar, and an undergrad research scholarship :)

Lucky you, I had some pretty good stats especially GPA and EC’s related to Carlson!
Hopefully I get some good scholarships

I’m sure you will, I have a fairly low gpa (3.66 uw) but lots of ECs and good testing, so they’ll probably view you even more favorably than they did me!
and i was actually super surprised to get the Bentson one because it seemed very exclusive and it also said it preferred Jewish students (i’m areligious and Asian) but they gave me one anyway hahah

My son got this yesterday:

In addition to the University’s competitive academic scholarships for which you are already being considered, a small number of scholarships funded by private donation are available to freshmen. These privately funded awards give preference to students who display strong academic performance and who meet certain criteria…

Has anybody ever received this email? Thank you.

Is he CLA and did the e-mail direct him to a site that requested further information?

Hi tt6062,

Yes, we received this email as well.
