Does anyone have any recommendations for a good five-day boarding school? It would preferably be on the west coast (I live close to Portland) but I have really easy access to flights and could do anywhere with a most at most a four-hour flight.
I know Nobles and Greenough is a 5-day boarding program. It’s a pretty good school but it’s on the East coast.
The only one I think that would be near you would be Oregon Episcopal Academy. I am unsure if they have 5-day boarding though. From what you are implying, are you seriously thinking about flying back-and-forth between your home and school from in the time between weekends and weekdays?
Even if your family is extremely affluent and has a private plane or something, I don’t think you seem to understand both the logistical and economical burden this would have, not to mention the complete waste of time it would be. No reputable boarding school would allow this sort of arrangement. You will be much better off being a 7-day boarder (and you’ll have SO many more options) and then intermittently return home. If being a 7-day boarding student isn’t something to consider, then I don’t think the boarding school experience is for you. I assume there must be some very good private day schools in/near Portland?
Some schools are 7 days but most people leave on the weekend, btw. You don’t need 5 day boarding to come home on weekends from time to time.
I’ll add that many schools with a bigger 5 day program are schools in more urban areas where the daily commute became a challenge to day families as traffic congestion increased or where public transportation wasn’t a great option.
Lawrence and Worcester come to mind. I think Shadyside in Pittsburgh may offer this. I see this more as a selling point to day families.
Thanks for the suggestion will surely check it.
The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY has a 5 day boarding program.
So does The Ross School in Eastern LI, NY.
5 day boarding school programs are for those that live relatively close by. Nobles (MA) and Masters (NY) are examples.
I don’t think 5 day boarding on the East coast would work for someone on the West coast…
It frankly wouldn’t work either if you live more than a 1.5-2 hr drive away from the school, and even that might be pushing it. I started out high school as a day student at a school that offered 5-day boarding, and pretty much everyone who took that option was about an hour to 45 mins away. It’s a viable option if you are in the outer range of the day student radius, but out of convenience (and to save money, because gas isn’t cheap!), you stay during weekdays so your parents only have to come to pick you up and drop you off once a week. A lot of them were also athletes who wanted more flexibility to leave campus to compete with their club teams on the weekend.
Although even getting to Gabreski airport could take close to an hour in season. (And “in season” seems to take longer every year.)
Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating. But I’ve always seem to get caught in heavy traffic, no matter what day of the week or time - even in January.
Yeah, I was looking for more west coast or even Ontario Canada area.
Hi, I probably should have worded this post better, what I meant by flights was basically something in Seattle because my mom already does this same commute for her work every week so she would actually pick me up, so I guess it was irrelevant to mention flights. Also thanks for being very honest but yes, I already knew an east coast school would not be an option. Thanks
Delphian School is in Oregon, and they also have a 5 day boarding program.
Yeah, basically 7 day boarding is actually what I would want, I only really asked about 5 day because I know my mom will be more agreeable when it comes to that vs. 7 day
There are quite a few students from WA attending Brentwood College School and Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island, near Victoria.
A few of the well-known boarding schools in Ontario are Appleby, Lakefield, and Ridley. SSAT.org, bottom right hand side of the home page, has a school search tool.
I am sure that there are some decent schools in the Pacific Northwest, but the only two that I know of that are really notable in the west outside of Oregon Episcopal are in California (Cate and Thacher). You’ll have much more options in a boarding school experience if you expand your search to the East Coast and be willing to take on the 7-day boarding option.
I don’t know Oregon or Washington, but in California, there is also Webb and Stevenson, among others.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, CA (between Burbank and Pasadena) has a small boarding program and is near the Burbank airport.
I think someone told me that Delphian is a Scientology school…so maybe not there…
