Good, Affordable Universities in Upstate NY?

Hello,

I am currently a sophomore at NYU Poly, majoring in computer science.

My plan is to transfer to another school before junior year for financial reasons.

I am paying roughly 30k per year for everything (tuition, rent, etc).

My GPA is currently 3.86 in all classes, 4.0 in major specific courses.

I'm looking for a school in the upstate NY area. It should have a good reputation (preferably a school that would be reputable if I wanted to work in Canada). Also, it should have a program that allows transfer students to get merit based aid/scholarships.

Note: I am out of state.. so I can't get NY tuition from state schools.

I was really interested in SUNY Buffalo.. but it seems they give absolutely no merit aid to transfer students.

If anyone could help me choose some schools, it would be really appreciated!

Thank you!

RIT fits your description. Their computer school is named for Tom Golisano, who has donated tens of millions to the school. Facilities are first rate, and graduates have great placement. You would likely get 6K Achievement Scholarship for Transfer Students. Your net cost still may be around the same as before, but RIT is a co-op school. You will have co-op earnings to lower your net cost. This will also give you great resume experience, and RIT is very well respected in industry. It’s also only an hour from Canada, so it’s well known there as well.

That said, as a transfer student, you will have a hard time lowering that net cost with any good upstate school. Privates give less merit for transfers, and you are OOS for SUNY.

RPI is a good school (in troy NY), good Comp sci, and generous with merit aid to freshmen.

I do not know about their policy on merit aid to transfers.

Clarkson University?

Clarkson isn’t too reputable in his major.
