Hi,
I am interested in biomed engineering or chemical engineering and later want to go on to med school. I have been looking at schools in the northeast mainly near NYC. But I have had a hard time finding good colleges that are in NYC. I think Columbia and NYU are the only better unis there. You guys have any suggestions for good schools in the NYC area. Doesn't have to be in the city but maybe like an hour or so away from it?
Thanks. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cooper Union

Cornell, Columbia, Cooper Union, RPI, Rochester

Cornell, RPI, Rochester are NOT an hour or less away from NYC.

only colleges i can think are cooper and columbia....perhaps nyu? i have no idea how nyu is for pre-med..

columbia???/ for engineering :|
thats not that great for it

Since good is a relative term, I am just going to list schools that have engineering programs in NYC.

NYU does not have an engineering program

City College -CUNY

New York institute of technology

Polytechnic University - in brooklyn

Pace University-3-2 dual-degree programs in conjunction with Manhattan College in electrical engineering and chemical engineering and RPI in engineering

NYU has a joint degree program with the Stevens Institute of Technology...u get a BA from NYU and a BS in engineering from SIT in 5 years...you might as well go to SIT if all you're looking for is an engineering degree. I think it's around 15-20 minutes away from NYC in Hoboken, New Jersey.

However, I do believe Columbia has a good engineering program..not GREAT...but good...Columbia's Fu School of Engineering I think...

Check out SUNY Stony Brook (on Long Island). I believe they have a bio-engineering program Hofstra may also have an engineering program.

Stevens Institute in Hoboken, NJ, right outside NYC. Not sure if they have chemE. Also, of course, Rutgers School of Engineering, in New Brunswick, NJ, about an hour from NYC by train or car.

Stevens is a great choice. Chem & biomedical are both offered. Short Path or ferry ride to NYC. Pretty campus. Plus, the city of Hoboken has a lot to offer.

Cooper Union, if you can get accepted. No Biomed engineering though.

The title says engineering in NY, not NYC

Isn't Cooper Union free if you get in?

yes cooper is free

And the original post says "You guys have any suggestions for good schools in the NYC area. Doesn't have to be in the city but maybe like an hour or so away from it?"

Manhattan College (in the Bronx) also has an engineering program.

Princeton & Rutgers are within an hour of NYC.

Princeton is more than an hour away from NYC. More like 1 1/2 hours, being optimistic. But obviously a nice choice if you can get in!

I can't imagine you've made the trip from NYC to Princeton too many times or know how to go. I can get from NYC to the western suburbs of Philadelphia in less than an hour and a half. Even biased, too slow, mapquest claims 1hr 8 min.

hmmm...didn't know that nyu didn't have engineering. thanks for the suggestions. So I guess I should also look at schools in the new jersey area.
