so i was hanging out with my friend nick today, and we started to wonder how the eats would be around ucsd. not like, the food places on campus, but around the general la jolla area. we're not gonna have cars, so is there any good place to eat around there? like... in n out, sonics, etc. not the typical McD's or BK or Taco Bell or anything like that.. does anyone know?

my question is this: what is the difference between del taco and taco bell. haha. i have never been to del taco before.

Sonics? What's that? Haha. Sorry no Sonics remotely close to UCSD (i think the closest one is in Anaheim). There are a few In N Outs I know of, not terribly far, there's within maybe ten miles of UCSD. La Jolla has a lot of restaurants, more upscale since well...it's La Jolla. I'm sure you could find something to eat down there if you've got the money. Not quite in La Jolla, but UTC has a bunch of mini eateries in the food court, like Sbarro's and a few restaurants outside like Red Robins which I kinda like. I'll add more later :)

we have red robins here. i've never been there, though.

i've never even heard of red robins. OMG! lets go white castle hunting.

White Castle? Not in California! Pay for air fare and you're on...;)

Yeah im from NY and unfortunately, hes correct. White Castle is only east coast; tri state area. However, they do sell frozen white castle burger meals at the grocery store and they are pretty much the same as in the actual 'restaurant'.

red robins is at eastridge over by jc pennys. and the white castle burgers from the grocery store are good.

Red Robin's is awesome. If you've never been there, they are essentially an affordable, gourmet hamburger place (Most hamburgers < $9), but the best part is with each hamburger or entree, you get unlimited fries. They're also known for having a really good strawberry lemonade with actual strawberry chunks inside.

Anyway. From what I hear, the campus dining is pretty good in SD, so don't be too quick to dismiss it. :} There's always a Jamba Juice that accepts our meal points, too, if you're more into that.

I think there's a BJ's or TGIF's around the corner. And Whole Foods. You can't go wrong with Whole Foods. I'm pretty sure La Jolla has everything you could want...if not, SD isn't far at all.

:P Planning to stay away from freshman 15. ;o

There's BJ's Grill, TGIF, Coldstone, Ben & Jerry's, a mexican restaurant that i forgot the name of, and many others that i don't know off the top of my head.

yeah I'm looking forward to the authentic hole-in-the-wall Mexican places...

By the way, when I was in La Jolla with my family we stumbled upon one of the BEST American eateries I've probably ever been to...it's called Chicago on a Bun...next time you're down there you should definitely check it out...

I thought this thread was about that show on the cooking channel with Alton Brown.

The mexican place in the same area as TGIF is Rubio's Mexican Grill. They have great fish tacos. There's a Rubio's on campus as well. A little further away at Carmel Valley Road (not walking distance) is Roberto's - a fast food more authentic mexican place well known in the San Diego area - you can pickup some food and eat it at Torrey Pines beach right next to it. They have very inexpensive food. The machaca burritos are great - full of all that's bad for you. More upscale but across the street from UCSD is an El Torito's Mexican place as well an Islands (sit-down burgers, etc.).

There are also movie theaters, a grocery, and many other stores in this same shopping area that's across the street (off of La Jolla Village Drive) from UCSD.

I hope there's good Indian food around UCSD...I can't survive without it.

hmmm speaking of theatres, is there a drive in around anywhere? not that i have a car but just wondering

haha Natalie, my mom plans to teach me how to cook Indian food!

mmmmm. this thread is making me hunngrryy

i've never been to the drive ins. i go to the movies at the same time as drive-ins, but in the theatre. not the parking lot. =[
