How are the food at UCSD?

How are the food at UCSD? How good is the buffet? Which college in UCSD has the best food?

Everyone loves OVT (Marshall). Also, Goody’s is really close to OVT and sells Chipotle type burritos if you’re a fan of those. Pines (Muir) is also pretty good. It sells a lot of semi-healthy food that’s often pretty bland but decent to eat. Cafe Ventanas (ERC) is okay and Canyon Vista (Warren) is edible. Foodworx (Sixth) is really small and usually only has 2 options, but its pizza is good. Plaza (Revelle) is not the best, but you can always go buy food at Roger’s next door.

And UCSD doesn’t do buffet style. You pay for each item.

I think the food in general is really good, but most people don’t agree. Apparently some people think nasty ass cup of noodles is better than dining hall food. It confuses me.

It definitely varies. I despised the food with all of my being and decided to move off campus 2nd year because I had such a strong aversion to the dining halls.

How about off-campus? Is it far away to downtown or big shopping center? Is food there good too??

Not bad, but cafeteria food is very fattening. Freshman fifteen was not fun. :(

I cook for myself now though. Nuff’ said.

There’s a mall not too far from UCSD that you can reach by bus, and there are pretty good restaurants around the Ralphs store region! Mmm~ Islands.

Lots of casual eateries within walking distance (15 minute walk from Price Center) or a few stops away via shuttle: Islands, CPK, BJs, TGI Fridays, Pick Up Stix, etc.

UTC has a good amount.

Horton Plaza (downtown mall) and Gaslamp have lots of great (albeit fairly expensive) choices. Hillcrest, Old Town, University Heights/North Park, which are all around 15 minutes from campus by car, are gems.

I don’t really thing freshmen 15 applies at UCSD since it’s not buffet style. I actually lost weight here, as well as a bunch of other people i have talked to.

I find the food here pretty good, but that’s just me.

Okay, I restate what I said.

Don’t make friends with the dessert section of cafeterias, or the snacks at college mini-marts (which is basically 75% of the store) and you won’t gain your 15 :p

Very tempting though since they have all the desserts lined up behind a lighted glass counter… mmm~

Always carry this with you and those sweets will all of a sudden be less tempting

Best food on campus- the bistro at the strand in the village…

Is it ever really busy at the Bistro?

I concur with jdshopa… don’t buy too many snacks from the markets or desserts in the dining halls and you’ll be fine with the weight gain issue, because Dining Dollars really do curb your eating and prevent you from ballooning.

I would rank the dining halls overall:
OVT (Marshall) > Canyon Vista (Warren) and Pines (Muir) tied > Revelle’s Plaza Cafe > Sixth > Cafe V (ERC)

Marshall has the best breakfast and Canyon Vista has really good dinner and overall diversity. Sixth I guess is the healthiest although dining halls don’t really vary in that respect. Fresh fruit and vegetables cooked in an appealing way are rare here, which sucks for those of us who like that. Cafe V took such a downturn in quality this year… beware.

Overall the food is not horrible. It’s better than high school food and sometimes there’s even food I might call “delicious.” My main complaint is the lack of fruit & vegetables and prices. Look out for Live Well meals, they’re pretty good on taste, nutrition and price. Most dining halls have a good breadth of food (soups, sandwiches, veggie entrees, sushi, noodles, etc.) The food isn’t horrible but you do get sick of it quickly.

I agree that staying away from the snacks/desserts is a must if you don’t want to gain weight.

In terms of food, I think Pines and Warren has the best food. Pines almost always has freshly carved turkey and roast beef sandwiches among other food that is pretty decent. Warren usually has pretty decent food specials and/or a stir fry station.

Cafe V - stay FAR away from it. I got food poisoning from there and the thought of Cafe V food still makes me feel nauseous.

Goody’s - like everyone mentioned before, a Chipotle-like burrito place. Be forewarned, my friend also got food poisoning from here and had to go to the hospital. We think it was from the lettuce not being washed because that was the only thing different that she had from everyone else.

Revelle - the food isn’t HORRIBLE here. I’m not sure why everyone complains. It’s decent, but I wouldn’t go out of my way just to eat here.

Sixth - unless you live there, not worth it to go there from what I’ve heard. I still haven’t made the journey and probably won’t as it’s week 7.

the Strand - pretty good food, HORRIBLE service. I’ve had MULTIPLE bad experiences and reservations are a MUST.

Also, the salads and sandwiches that they sell at all of the markets aren’t bad, especially if you’re in a rush! The new market by the Village has rotisserie chicken and fresh cut deli meats and cheeses.

^Foodworx has great pizza! You should go try some. And I think you can make it there before the end of the quarter. With the next like 45,000 minutes left in the quarter I bet you can spare 30. :)

Do you need a reservation to eat the The Bistro?

OH GOD. Don’t bother @ the Strand w/o a reservation - they are SO anal about that. I wrote a pretty lengthy yelp review on that…
