I’m questioning a mechanical engineering degree, so I want to have a back up major. What are some good majors in the economic field? I think I would like international or pharmoeconomics. I’m open to any field though. What are some good CA colleges for an economics major? Thanks CC!
Pre-PhD or pre-professional?
If pre-PhD, then you may want to prefer a school with a more math emphasis. In California, these would be UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCSC, Stanford, and Caltech, where you can take intermediate economics courses with greater than usual math emphasis (i.e. using more advanced math than single variable calculus).
I’m only a high school student and I don’t know which would be best for me…
Undergrad is not that specialized; most colleges don’t have different “types” of economics. They just have an economics major. Typically, you can’t study pharmacoeconomics at the undergrad level. Some undergrad schools may have international economics…but most are just going to have an economics major.
A typical undergraduate economics major will require:
- Introductory economics.
- Intermediate microeconomics.
- Intermediate macroeconomics.
- Econometrics.
- Additional elective economics courses, where you can tailor your major to your interest within the range of offerings by the department.
- Math and statistics courses that are prerequisites for the intermediate economics and econometrics courses. These vary from minimal (non-calculus introductory statistics) to typical (single variable calculus and statistics) to heavy (multivariable calculus, linear algebra, calculus-based statistics), depending on the school and department.
is CA your only choice of college location? or you’re open to study in any other state? even another country?
