I'm thinking Binghampton might be a reach for me, would appreciate if someone knows?
Male, GPA 3.3-3.4,Sat 1880,(taking it again), 7 AP's, 2 Syracuse classes by time I graduate.
I know Binghampton has a great academic reputation, how's living there?

First of all, that school is called ’ Binghamton’.

Second, %75 of binghamton students have a GPA above > 3.75

Third, if you could get over 1900, your chance would be more significant.

The weather is too cold there.

It’s a reach, but if you get those SATs up you have a chance. the GPA isn’t so bad considering your course load. Just a bit of side info on Binghamton, however; it’s become a hot spot lately and is partially gaining a reputation as a school for ivy league-caliber students who can’t afford the ivy price.

Yeh, it’s what I thought, a reach. It’s harder than people think to pick a Suny. I want off of Long Island, New Paltz seems too much a commuter school, I hear a lot of horror stories about Albany housing, and the rest are too far North!

Just so you know, New Paltz is not a commuter school. Lots of kids come from far enough away that commuting is not realistic. My son goes there from Long Island and sticks around on the weekends and so does everyone he knows.

I’m glad to hear that New Paltz might not be deserted on weekends. I also got the feeling it was mostly for art or theater majors, and wasn’t big in sports. Can you tell me more? It’s a good location.

Yes, the location is really good, that was a big factor in my son’s decision to transfer there. It does have an artsy element, but there are a lot of strong majors besides art/theater. One of my son’s roommates is a psych major and the other is a business major. I know that the education and communication/journalism schools are very popular too. It actually has a good amount of majors for a smaller school.

New Paltz is not big into sports like some other schools who have football stadiums and get crazed on game days by painting their faces and having tailgate parties. He had that at his old school and it got old fast for him. They do have sports teams and recruit athletes for them though. The environment is more low key I think.

It’s a real up and coming school and the best all around SUNY in my opinion. It’s a great size, good location and has a fun and friendly student body. The academics are getting stronger every year. My son transferred from the University of Miami and he said the classes at NP were harder then at UM.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

If he’s not coming home on weekends, there must be enough to do, and enough kids to hang out with. I do think I might miss the sports atmosphere. It sounds like he has a ‘triple’ dorm, how’s that working out? I hear Albany triples up a lot, and the dorms are small.

He is not living in the dorm…he is living in the village in a townhouse with 3 other students. Living off campus at NP is great cause its walking distance to the school and Main Street. Main Street has quite a few bars that many of the kids hang out at…they have live music sometimes and dancing and theme nights like my son told me they had a beach night and brought a ton of sand in at one of the bars. There are house parties too and the school sometimes has things planned as well. There’s plenty to do and lots of kids around on the weekends. There are also movies, theater, coffee houses, concerts, etc. in town or in nearby Poughkeepsie.
Last year they had a huge freshman turnout and had to triple up a lot of the freshman but this coming fall they have made sure not to accept as many students so not to have that problem again.
