Hi guys,

Just got my SAT scores back and wondered in your collective opinions were my chances of getting in.....

SAT Writing: 740
SAT Critical Reading: 730
Math: 570
Total: 2040

I know that Math could potentially be a serious issue.
I'd be going to UPenn for something to do with linguistics, with no real plans for any serious math courses. I'm currently a junior in an Advanced Math Course.
I have a 4.0 GPA, do volunteer work at local library, am in a choral society, participate in soccer, captain the basketball and track teams for my school, and do substitute/student teaching in a foreign language. (and if it helps I'm the editor of the school yearbook)

I was planning on taking the U.S. History, Biology, and French subject tests this June, but with this score, I'm not sure if I should proceed with that or retake the SAT I.

Thanks so much for your time and advice.
~Ian

Ian, Your math score is a serious issue. Retake the SAT. You may do better with another version of the test or just by getting another year of math behind you. If you’d like a scholarship remember that colleges want the whole package- show them that you can do it or at least care enough to try! Otherwise you are in good shape.
PS Take the ACT for math if the SAT retake fails to produce a better score. You may do better with the ACT math format and I am sure your other sections will be great.

thanks momasita,

I guess I’ll retake it, however, I did wonder if taking one of the SAT Math subject tests instead would remedy the situation without retaking the entire test. I’m really happy with those other two test results though…
I’m pretty sure that there’s no pick and choose when it comes to which scores to submit.
Btw, do you happen to know if Upenn looks at two or all three of the SAT I categories when admitting?
Thanks again…

IDK about the subject area test- my reservations are:
1 you might not do so hot- giving you another bad math score on your record
2 look at the subject area test data on college board website, the % of kids who score really well is high. This is because only top students are taking subject area tests to get into HYP/MIT/Duke top schools. It will be tough to score well against these students.
IDK anything about UPenn sorry

PS actually look at your SAT student report they send in the mail-open it up & on the inside it shows the % of kids getting different scores on the various tests. For example look at Korean subject area test, 89% of kids taking it get 750+ meaning they are pretty much all native Korean speaking students taking that test.

why dont u just study for the math section lol, its really really easy math lol… like cmon its like middle school math – or is it just me -_-
