Good food you've eaten at Bama and off-campus

During our last visit to Bama, we ate at the off-campus restaurant Bento Japanese, which is on The Strip. We had the Bento chicken…it was awesome. And that sauce is great.

Where else have YOU eaten and what did you love there?

Curry at Ruan Thai, on the Strip

Waysider (15th st & Greensboro Ave) great breakfast

Mugshots (corner of Univ blvd & Greensboro ave) great burgers

Bear Trap (on the strip, in back and on top of Alabama Express/ Phils) good lunch and cheap

Newk’s and Arby’s (both locations) and great muffins from Publix.

i wouldn’t expect arby’s to make this list!

hmm … when we were there i think we ate at chick fil a and blue moon. chick fil a was the same as usual, and blue moon was not really the BBQ we are used to. we were going to go to dreamland … but when we got there we found out they only had ribs. my kids don’t eat ribs!

so we haven’t sampled much of the tuscaloosa fare.

^^^

Does the Dreamland in T-Town only have ribs? We have a Dreamland in Huntsville that has pulled pork.

I liked the pulled pork at Full Moon.

i am not sure if they were out of other stuff or if that location only had ribs. i think it may have been that location had only ribs. i am not sure. it took us FOR.EV.ER to find the place, and then we had to leave!!

i have never had pulled pork (we eat mostly brisket here). i am kind of scared of it. does it have a lot of fat in it?

i may try making pulled pork sometime.

Pulled pork has little fat. It’s just the meaty part.

Wow…I just checked the T-town menu…they do only have ribs there. Weird! The Huntsville Dreamland has a big menu…including chicken, stew, sausages, BBQ pork, etc.

The Tuscaloosa Dreamland is known for having a limited menu while the Northport location offers more choices.

In addition to the places already mentioned, I’ve liked:
Bottomfeeder’s on 14th Street (A meat and three restaurant, Southern)
Bob Baumhower’s Wings, (usually called Wings), near campus (Wings)
O’Charley’s on McFarland (Casual, known for its rolls, cheesy potato soup, and
excellent service)
the Cracker Barrel at Exit 76 (Down Home Cookin’)
It’s not the normal CC-type restaurant, but Hooters is on Skyland Blvd. across from the movie theater.

Speaking of meat & three restaurants, Doster Cafe is quite good, and it’s on campus near the quad.

As far as on-campus eating options, I tend to frequent Bryant and Fresh Foods for reason of quality, and Lakeside, well, due to its location and late hours.
I generally avoid the Ferg food court, as it’s overpriced and most of the food is very unimpressive. The Strip is extremely close to campus, though, (~5 minute bike ride from most anywhere on campus) and the food choices are generally better. As a word of warning, avoid the Quick Grill, though.

A few thoughts:

-Admittedly, I haven’t been that impressed with Tuscaloosa barbecue, but Archibald’s Full Moon, Moe’s and Dreamland are all decent. (On a side note, Full Moon BBQ seems to inundate campus activities.)
-I won’t attribute good food to either chain, but Tuscaloosa has two Waffle Houses and one IHOP near campus. They’re open late and are very popular, so be prepared to frequent them.
-Wintzell’s (sp?) is a great oyster house in Northport; I’ve been there twice and enjoyed both visits.
-Yes, Five Guys is a chain, but their burgers are excellent, as I’m sure others here will attest.
-Innisfree, while a pub, has great food- the fish and chips are a great pick.
-Sven and Lai Lai are both good Chinese restaurants on the Strip; I find Sven to be the better of the two, though.

Yes, Swen is good!

Five Guys is the BEST. Much better than In 'n Out because of the toppings choices! The fries are awesome, too!

Considering how much time my older son spends at IHOP late at night, I know it’s popular with the kids. IHOP should just move on campus…LOL

Thanks for the heads up on the pulled pork. Love pulled pork! And not as messy as ribs, though ribs are delicious!

SEAtide, you crack me up with the Cracker Barrel. That’s for the geriatric set in these parts. Not that I’m too far from that.

I like DePalmas…

They have good coffee there, too.

Chuck’s Fish - located downtown, is also a great spot if you want a more upscale meal.

It seems it’s the restaurant of choice by the athletic department. It’s where Saban and company take all the recruits during their official visits.

We second the Chuck’s Fish nomination – excellent food. We ate there our first night in Tuscaloosa, the day before the Capstone event and the Championship Celebration. The whole football team seemed to be in the restaurant. In fact, this was the first time I have ever had Fried Green Tomatoes and I loved them. Son was just asking if we were going to go back for the tomatoes when we are down in May.

Also on our list is Dreamfields in Tuscaloosa. They only serve ribs and sides but it was excellent. We can’t wait to go back.

Mmmm, thinking I’ll put Chuck’s Fish on the list to eat on the evening of May 26th when we roll in for Bama Bound.

^ ditto - :)

Be sure to make a reservation if you can. It’s a pretty popular spot and can fill up quick on weekends when there is something going on.

It really is a nice place though and fairly reasonable $$ wise.

Does anyone know if Venice Italian Fusion changed hands? The food used to be better there. Maybe the chef changed?

Well we will have to meet at chucks perhaps before the Bama Bound in May we will be out there on the 27th. for a few days. Some parents should def plan to get together.
