Good honors courses

In order to keep my scholarship from the Honors College I have to take 3 honors courses in the first two years. Can anyone suggest some interesting, and manageable, honors courses.

Thanks

These look easy. I only checked Fall 2012 grade distributions for the same teacher and class that will be offered in Fall 2013. There are probably some more being offered in Fall 2013 that were taught in earlier semesters but I did not have time to look them up. The bottom two numbers for each class are the section gpa and the number of A’s and A+'s given out of the total students who stayed in the class.

Course: HON-H 232 Instr: Gubar E

Also, you can take Kelley honors classes as a member of Hutton, and these would fulfill the requirement you need, I am pretty sure. BUS-K 204 THE COMPUTER IN BUS: HONORS (3 CR) is a good one (Average Class Grade: 3.681; 132 A-,A,A- out of 176 students who stayed in the class) and might be easier to get into than any of the three liberal arts honors classes, depending on how early in the summer you can register. If you take any liberal arts honors classes, it might be easier to get in beginning in Spring 2014 semester because you won’t have to register so late vis a vis other students and they won’t be filled up yet. K204 meets only twice a week compared to K201, which is a plus for it.

If you are in Kelley and trying to get the general honors notation and want to use a lot of Icore prerequesites for it, then A205 and A207 --honors financial and managerial accounting-- and K204 and X202 – the two business computer courses-- are good choices. Then take three honors courses in COAS for the seven required for the honors notation from Hutton.

<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington;

“Students may not count more than two courses from any one department toward the notation.”

Thus, A205, A207, and the two Kelley computer business courses are good choices for Kelley students, two each from two departments in Kelley. Z304 instead of Z302 is also very good; easy grading; take it jr or sr year; if you are still in Hutton, you don’t need to be in Kelley honors to get into Z304, which is an easy A (42 A+/A out of 47 grades in Fall 2012).

Thank you for your input. I was looking at BUS-K 204 but was unsure if I could take it as a freshman

K204 is definitely a freshman course; don’t know why the numbering is two-hundred level. Probably be easier to get into K204 your first semester than an easy grading COAS class. Also, not a big deal to take an easy grading COAS class and a Kelley honors in the same semester. My son took seven COAS/Kelley honors classes prior to junior year and two in one semester was never a problem, with getting easy A in all the COAS classes.

You can check the Hutton site for workload for classes and detailed descriptions of course content. Usually just a few short papers for most classes. The “cross-listed” courses in the list below also meet the Hutton requirement as honors courses.

What is a normal course load (credits) per semester for a freshman at IU? I have a lot of AP credits coming into school and I dont want to overload myself the first semester because I have to maintain a specific GPA

If you are a direct admit with lots of ap credit, you can probably easily get by with taking only four three-credit (and the occasional one or two credit course Kelley requires) courses per semester. Taking five can make things pretty stressful. If you are trying to get into business honors, having a light, but full-time, schedule will give you time to meet the gpa requirement and have a lot of EC’s, and EC’s are important to get into Kelley honors.

Also, taking courses in summer at a cc and transferring credit to Kelley can help you reduce your fall/spring semester loads.

Here are a couple of four-year schedules from the recent past, where both students graduated with finance/accounting majors and 150 credits. The first student had a lot of ap credits, was in business honors and investment banking workshop; the second student had no ap credits, but some foreign language credits. Both did some summer school. In only one semester was more than four three-credit courses taken.

These schedules give you an idea of how to work cc credit into your four-year plan, especially if you are trying to get 150 credits in four years, which accounting majors need these days to get interviews with good companies. As a direct admit, you have a great deal of flexibility schedule wise compared to non-direct admits.

2nd student picture file transcript; credit hours are on the far right.

http://■■■■■■■.com/view.php?pic=j79nk8&s=6</a></p>

I wouldn’t recommend taking more than 15 credit hours as a first semester freshman regardless of major. First semester is a big change–you want to get the swing of things in classes, get to meet new people and make friends, and get involved on campus (greek life, clubs, etc.). Not that academics aren’t your first priority, but you want to get everything in line for the rest of your years, and first semester is a great time to do that.

That is what I am thinking. I have to take a course that is worth only 1 credit so I am actually looking at taking only 13 credits for the first semester. I have enough AP credits to make up for the light load. The other issue is that my AP credits and test scores take care of the majority of my general ed requirements so I will be taking mostly courses for my major. I am also lucky because I am a direct admit so I dont have that added pressure my first year.

Have I missed the opportunity if I’m a freshman 2013 and haven’t given IU my information regarding AP Credits? I only have credits for LA and APUSH, but I also have a high english/reading ACT score 32+ that I’m under the impression could help me out? I never submitted them with my application because I was under a time crunch.

I am interested in the IBW and Kelley honors.

Coste…you can send them now. I suggest you get them there prior to orientation/registration

Coste, the 32 ACT reading exempts you from having to take W131:

If you have achieved one of the following test scores, you have fulfilled the English composition requirement and will be exempted from it:

SAT (recentered) Verbal score of 670 or higher; or
ACT English score of 32 or higher; or
AP Program English: Language and Composition score of 4 or 5 (earns 3 cr. hours ENG W131).

If you have achieved one of the above test scores AND you scored 660 or higher on the SAT Writing Test, you are exempt from the English composition requirement, and are eligible to apply for 2 credit hours in English W143 with a grade of S (satisfactory). Please call (812)855-1430 to request this special credit.

[Composition at IU | Requirements](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)

You can call 812-855-1430 (the English Composition secretary) to get the W143 two credits added to your transcript.

The exemption should for W131 with your ACT score should show up automatically around registration time or sooner in your onestart account, but only if you have submitted the scores to IU, of course; if you qualify for credit for W143 with your ACT score and your SAT writing score, then you often have to call to get the two credits for W143.
