December 1st marks the day when Amherst begins reviewing all ED applications. We should know something in the next 8-12 days. I wish everyone the very best of luck and hopefully we will have an opportunity to meet in the coming months.

hey,

do you know if they notify us via mail? if so, do east-coasters find out like on the 12th while the midwest / west-coasters find out later?

Based on last year, you will get a letter in the mail. The size of the envelope is the same (regular business-size) whether it is a letter of acceptance, denial or wait list. If you are accepted you will receive a much larger UPS/Express Mail packet in the spring when the regular admission packets go out. The actual letter you will receive regarding ED decisions will either say accepted, denied or wait-listed. To my knowledge, Amherst does not let you know their decision via e-mail. Based on last year, the first people to hear one way or another came on Dec. 10, which was a Monday. So, my guess is Amherst probably sent out most of the letters on Friday, Dec. 7. Again, I am going on info from last year's class.

did they really start reading them today? It seems more plausible that this week is for 'final decisions.' It's hard to believe that they'd take three weeks to lay eyes on an app.
but who knows.

My understanding is that Amherst requires all ED apps to be in on the 15th of Nov. They spend the next two weeks making sure that everything related to the apps (letters of rec, mid-term grades, essays, etc) are also turned in. As long as the actual application is in by the 15th there is some degree of flexibililty with the supplemental info. This is why students are able to track their applications for two weeks to make sure everything is a go by Dec. 1. Once Dec 1 hits it takes a very short period of time for the admissions folks to go through everything and make their decisions.

praise the admission officers if we get our decisions by next monday.

My understanding is that at least two people will review each application when it is complete. They make notes, comments, and so forth. Then ---maybe starting Dec. 1st?--- the admissions committee as a whole will meet and review all the applications. The earlier readers discuss what they gathered from their careful review, the group discusses it, and then they vote or in some way come to a consensus on admit, deny, or defer to RD.

That's what I picked up some where along the way, anyway... not sure if that's exactly how it goes time-wise, but it's something like that.

Good luck to all of you!

rentof2, i believe the process you described is correct. i went to divoh and the admissions officers explained their admissions process and it was similar to that

time wise i also dont know... but for SCEA at stanford apps also start to be read today or something of that sort

i NEED to get into this school...

Yes, good luck to all.

just to be a cynic....isnt it sort of funny that someone can wish a person luck, and still hope that they get in over that person? should we really say, "good luck, but if it comes down to it, i hope i get in over you." so as not to be a hypocrite now im not going to say good luck. how about....i hope for all of us that the committee makes the best possible decisions, and that we learn to live with whatever the verdict is.

Well Said, trombone player.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with wishing everyone good luck. There are better than 130 admissions for early decision. If Amherst accepted all ed candidates who are regulars to this site, we would be well under the 130 number (at least from the names that have been regular posters). To put it another way...I hope the admissions office finds all of us worthy candidates and sends us all congratulatory letters in a few days.

Well, I got in last year, so good luck! :)

If anyone was wondering, an admissions dean in the LiveChat said that they are looking to mail on the 12th.

FYI...this link is a neat little pbs show on Amherst college and shows how the admissions department goes about selecting students to attend Amherst. It runs about 10 minutes but I think you will find it worth your while. It is about 4 years old but it still captures the selection process that is in play today.

In the end, no one enrolled. =

Thanks for the link...I really enjoyed watching this process play out. It was interesting to see Amherst turned down by two students who opted for ivies.

i would personally take amherst over any school (obviously). at the ivies, i feel like you have a lot of brilliant minds, but few brilliant teachers. they simply do not take a personal interest in their students (according to a few friends at harvard and dartmouth). amherst is great because you get brilliant people who are also great teachers

^Okay. I think people like to say these sort of things to make themselves feel better. I think Amherst, Williams, Swat AND the ivies all have great teachers. The ivies just also have top notch graduate professors too. At the undergraduate level they are equal in teaching quality.
