Good News for tradtional wait listed students

FYI, my daughter was waitlisted by Smith. On Tuesday of this week, she received a call from Smith informing her of admission.Details were to be sent via U.S. mail. Package has yet to arrive. This may be of interest to other waitlisted students. They are taking students from the waitlist.

Congratulations to your daughter! :-)

Good luck to everyone else on the wait list who still wants to attend Smith!

I never saw the letter, but I believe that was the content of my daughters letter also. I don't think she was interested in the wait list. She is quick to move on with things, and I don't think she ever felt there was only one right place. Last week or so, she said she was glad that phase was over and that she now had a "plan." She also fell into a very nice scholarship...at least some people read the recommendation letters. Good luck to everybody...may you be happy with your choices!

It seems from the posts the tradtional wait list letters are out. What I understand about the Ada list is that they have 69 deposits for 65 places. In other years they had 12 drop off in May when other schools went to their wait lists. As I understand it now they are waiting to see if the Ada program will admit more now or if any or going to drop. They could keep options open as far as the end of June.I have been admitted to a couple og good schools including Bryn Mawr and Sarah Lawernce and Fordham. But I reaaly feel strongly about Smith. It sounds like your D loves it!If you get any updates let me know!
Thanks,
Scottiegirl

TheDad,
Were you able to get any information on the wait list? I have heard that they have extended offers to a few not needing financial aid but are in the process of figuring out how much aid they have available to offer for the remaining slots, a process which takes some time.

Nastan, I dropped a query in one pipeline...I should hear by early next week at the latest. I completely forgot about it when speaking with the admissions officer who covers SoCal today...sorry. She's leaving admissions for a different career and we were talking about other things, best of luck in the future, ripples affecting many lives, that sort of thing. But I think my other pipeline will turn up something.

Thanks, my daughter is very anxious about it so any news helps.

She is not anxious any more, she's elated. She got the call this morning - she's in!!! The whole household breathed a collective sigh of relief. We should be getting the paperwork and financial aid information in the next few days to see what we do next. Thank you everyone for your help and information. Good luck scottie girl!

Congrats!!!! I wish her a wonderful 4 years at Smith.
Ellen

Thank, I know they will be.

Congratulations....Best Wishes

W00-hoo! Congratulations for your D, Nastan. Welcome to the club of Smith parents. (Before the Carnegie Hall concert, I saw another Smith dad coming out of our hotel. How did I know he was a Smith dad? His t-shirt said something like "My Daughter and my $$ go to Smith." LOL. Kinda.)

Btw, as I mentioned in another thread, I have a fair number of pictures taken at Smith...all exterior shots, alas. It will probably be the weekend before I get them downloaded and labled but if anyone wants to see them, drop me an e-mail.

I am not sure if this belongs here but now that my daughter has been accepted and we are waiting financial aid news, is it likely to be all loans? The letter that came with the wait list said that Smith would meet 100% of demonstrated need and when her GC called the other day she was told they had offered admission to those that didn't need financial aid first and were in the process of figuring out how much they had left to offer to people off the wait list. Now I am concerned that the aid amount will be all loans and no grants. Does this happen or is it unlikely?

A single data point: a friend of D's was admitted off the waitlist two years ago and got something like an 85-percent ride.

Another data point: the loans we have to do are relatively moderate. The loans we choose to do are on top of that, e.g., how we deal with EFC.

I am sure they will meet your needs,NastanI was told that they would not offer admission if they could not meet all needs of students.
I have been told that they are still unsure if they will go to the Ada Comstock wait list!Well,I put a deposit down at Bryn Mawr and would still go to Smith if offered admission.I will have a 4.0 this semester in the honors program at my community college.I also intern at a local nonprofit,so I am still keeping my fingers crossed!
Again Nastan congrats to your D!I wish her alot of luck!

I know what our EFC is supposed to be and we can deal with that but it seems at the other schools she was accepted to, between merit aid and grants, work study and the student loan, it always worked out to approximately the EFC, no additional loans from the school. I was just afraid we would get the financial aid package with our need being met in just loans with no grants. As tough as it will be we can live with the EFC but not the addition of thousands of dollars on top of that in loans from the school. She's SO excited but I am cautioning her to try to keep it in check until we hear from financial aid. I just can't wait until the whole admissions process is over with a happy ending!

Thanks, Scottie girl, we'll keep our fingers crossed for you. Just keep in contact with Smith. I think the admissions person must have felt she knew my daughter pretty well for all phone calls and additional information she sent. But it certainly paid off for her. Good luck.

Nastan, I would be very surprised if your D received a "loans-only" package. Also, a note from our experience: initially, Smith was the worst of the four financial aid offers my D received. They were in the same ballpark but there was a $4K spread.

I had a polite discussion with a FinAid officer, made the point that Smith was D's first choice, there was a review, and a revised FinAid offer came in being the best by about $200.

It doesn't hurt to ask if things don't line up, especially if you have better offers from another school. I was low-key putting the other offers out there...left it to them to ask me to FAX the #1 offer to them. Also, I was very careful never to back them into a corner with a "She can't come here if the offer isn't improved" tack. I just made it clear that the dollars didn't quite match up but that D really really wanted to come to Smith.

Fwiw, she probably would have gone to Smith anyway. But it made signing off on everything easier.

TheDad: Congratulations on your 2,000th post!!!

Wow...I hadn't even noticed. How totally fitting that it was on a Smith topic.

TheDad, now you just need to get it up to 2,000* threads *and you'll have caught up to your post count on the old boards!
