I was wait listed for Smith, but it remains my first choice. Have any other students who were wait listed (and chose to stay on the list) heard from Smith yet? How will we find out (phone call, letter, smoke signal, etc)? And for that matter, does anyone know what happens to those students after they get accepted? Is there still finaid available? How long would we have to decide if we can actually attend or not? May 1st deadlines are obviously out the window at this point. Is there still housing available for students accepted so late?

Thanks for hearing me out! Hope I get some answers!

ALazyNay, Smith will not admit you without offering 100% of your financial need per Smith’s formula. So you might not like the aid package, but Smith will offer you what their formula determines you need.

Housing is guaranteed for all four years (you have to petition to live off-campus if you don’t get a spot in the lottery) so yes, housing is available. Smith also doesn’t assign housing until late July.

I think it’s a little early to be hearing about the waitlist – people had til May 1 to send their decisions, so Smith is still waiting to make sure all the mail has come in. I’d wait a few weeks before getting worried.

Thanks, borgin. Your post was very helpful. :] I know it’s too early to hear any admission decision yet, but i was hoping that other girls had inquired after the same things I had at the asmission office. A woman I spoke to said that I might hear anywhere from late in the first week in May to the last week in June. I’m hoping that I don’t have to wait all the way until July just to hear rejection, part 2. Are there any older members here who have wait list success stories from Smith?

You say that Smith will not admit me without offering 100% of my financial aid per their formula, but do you know whether or not they’ll accept me if that formula shows I need a lot of aid? Not to mean anything against Smith (I wouldn’t still be pursuing it if I wasn’t absolutely in love with it) but is my being a good candidate enough for them, or do I need to be rich too? Because if that’s the case, no amount of academic excellence is going to get me off of that waitlist.

ALazyNay, Smith is known for promoting economic diversity; however, your concerns are justified. I suspect it will depend on how many full-paying students accept Smith’s offer of admissions – and how many aid packages are declined.

Smith is only about 95% need-blind in admission, so yes, there’s a possibility that if you need more aid than Smith has to offer you could be denied admission on that basis.

ALazyNay,
I recieved a phone call from Smith on Tuesday, while I was shopping. The admissions person stated, if I was still interested in coming to Smith this fall. I was shocked, I said yes. But right now I am torn between Smith and WHeaton. So I dont know what to do.

lacy1,
Congrats, thats really awesome :] Just out of curiosity, did you send them any additional information between the time you were waitlisted and May 1?

As for the differences between Wheaton and Smith, I can’t say. But I do have a friend who will be attending Wheaton next fall and is absolutely thrilled. (Not that I’m trying to deter you from Smith, just saying)
