<p>Has anyone heard of any waitlist news at Smith? I know that one isn't supposed to obsess over waitlists, but Smith is my #1 by far. The "Waitlist Buzz" thread over at the Admissions forum has made me anxious again, and any news would be appreciated! </p>
<p>Also, any other waitlist-ees hanging around around here? Perhaps if any of us get the lucky call, we can post here and the like? =)</p>

<p>Daughter got the call last night. Now she needs to decide between Smith and Mount Holyoke. Any insights?</p>
<p>Smith vs. Mount Holyoke has been discussed frequently on this forum, you can browse and find lots of threads. I think a consensus, by no means unanimous, would say that Smith is more academically intense and that Mount Holyoke as a campus, while gorgeous, is more remote (I would say the setting is “bucolic”).</p>
<p>Smith has the house system, which is terrific, MHC has conventional dorms.</p>

<p>NEmomof2: I got the call last week and I chose Smith over Mount Holyoke. While I really liked MHC and would have been able to start with some advanced courses, I feel like I would be more challenged and occupied at Smith even with the introductory courses. In the end, it was the only college where I felt completely at home. In addition, my financial aid package was better at Smith.</p>
<p>My D has a good friend at Moho - both are happy but my D definitely thinks SMith is more academically challenging something she wanted. She has also gotten a jo for next year as a course tutor and as a lab research assist which I think are pretty amazing opportunities for a Sophomore to be. She is not a Stride scholar so this is something that happened more organically. I work at a large University and this is pretty unavailable to underclassmen. I know Moho has similar opportunities but I was impressed witht eh amount and type of research done in the sciences at Smith. He Moho friend is very happy though and is dancer who had wonderful performance opportunities. Sorry to come down on both sides of the fence. On Smith;s behalf I think the house community especially the mix of classes is a really excellent model. My D goat a lot out if having upperclassmen around to ask questions and learn the ropes and many of her friends were not first years.</p>
<p>We have a family friend who is graduating this year from MHC, and she has had an amazing experience, just as my daughter had had at Smith. Although Smith is usually known for its more rigorous academics and tougher admissions, MHC is not a cake walk, by any means. I’m sure MHC is stronger in some departments, and Smith in others. As TheDad pointed out, the deciding difference between the two is not usually academic but rather geographical and emotional. MHC students take the bus/drive to Northampton while Smithies just walk. Some like the insular (and gorgeous) campus of MHC, while it would drive others crazy. </p>
