I just got my score results and they were kind of as expected I guess:
CR: 670 92%
Math: 800 99%
Writing: 730 (71&10) 97%

I am a junior at a prep school in MA and I come from China. I did SAT prep during the summer and my practice test scores are usually around 2250. When do you think I should take it again? Would you recommend December or sometime next year?

I’d definitely try to boost the CR score. Especially within your demographic, high math scores like yours are a bit more common. A high CR score can help set you apart a bit.

@triplehelixva Thanks for replying! CR was definitely the section I devoted most time to. In practice tests, I usually get 700+ but I think the first-time experience was what made the score decrease. What do you think I should do in order to boost the CR score?

I found that after taking AP English Language and Composition, I was a lot better at critical reading in terms of the SAT and as a general skill (raised 720 CR to 800). Rather than studying for SAT CR multiple choice, study AP LangComp multiple choice (lots of study books, I don’t have one particular recommendation) because their questions are much harder. The average AP question is probably about as hard as the hardest SAT CR question.

I would wait until near the end of this year to try again. CR is hard to raise through pure studying. More time spent speaking English, working in your coursework in English, and reading literature is going to do you the most good. Focus a lot on those skills over the next six months and try again late in the spring. Study for and take subject tests early in the spring if you need those.

@triplehelixva @intparent Thanks for your advice! As a matter of fact, I am taking AP Lang this year so hopefully my skills will improve after a year of study I will also start preparing for the SAT IIs. I am thinking of either bio or chem (took math II already and got a 800) but I only took honors-level classes in those. Do you suggest taking them?

I think Bio has a tough curve, a lot of people take it, and a lot of them have had AP Bio. Chem might be a better choice, but study hard for it, as you will be competing against people who took AP Chem.

What are you asking? This poster is a junior in high school, and students do not normally identify their HS on CC (too easy to guess who they are).

Why not take it in October, and read literature (War & Peace, Lolita- I find the Russians have better english than native-borns!, or at least the translators do) over the summer? I love the idea of studying the AP study guides! Harry Potter also uses English very well and ranges wide with vocab.
