got a B...

After some poor planning and with many academic competitions taking place in April/May, I ended up with a B in English II Honors. This is my first B on my report card and I wanted to know how much this would hurt my chances at getting into a top college. (I was a sophomore, and the academic competitions were USAMO, National Science Bowl, National Science Olympiad, and the AP tests I took, Physics C, Calculus BC, and Computer Science A)

What are some things I can do next year to make up for this? (I realize I am sort of overreacting about this but I am being completely serious)

Edit: this is probably the wrong section to post this oops

Won’t kill you, chillax.

Seriously. Everything else is probably an A anyway so you haven’t ended all chances yet.

Get over it. Just try to do better next year.

I’m not trying to be mean, but this basically fits every stereotype of CC. You’re taking BC Calculus and Physics C in sophomore year; assuming you actually did well on the APs, you are probably intelligent enough to get into any school in the US. At this level, your grades are far less important than your personality/character/demonstrated interests.

You’re going to be rejected from every single school you apply to. But don’t worry, Community College is always open to those willing to pay.

…jk. But seriously, relax. And what the above poster said is true: you’re a very obvious example of the CC stereotype, which could actually hurt you in the long run for the really top tier schools. So relax and enjoy Junior year next year; don’t kill yourself by spreading yourself too thin and doing too much.

ok thanks guys
I just get intimidated about the college application process so I just try to do my best
I’m actually a pretty popular guy and I don’t just stay home studying every day (I know people that do or at least say they do) but I love math and science. If I actually did study like the stereotypical CCer I would actually get a decent score on SAT CR and also do better on USAMO
well anyway thanks

This is a bit sad to see. I agree with someone above who said that “this is the typical CC”

It is quite evident that you’re an extremely intelligent kid and I’m only saying this for your own good and not to be mean. Yes, it is true that these top colleges do want extremely intelligent kids like you but above that, they look for those all around students.

So don’t worry so much about small things like that, relax.

I got a couple Bs, and now I go to a school notorious for rejecting all the actually qualified applicants and being overpriced, dangerous, and in Washington state. So you’re screwed, clearly.

like everyone else has already said, relax. one B won’t prevent you from going to your dream school. colleges like to see you challenging yourself, and taking that extra honors class will impress them more that that single B on your transcript will hurt your chances. more important than the effect that grade has on your GPA is what you have learned from getting a B. now you know the importance of balancing academics and ecs and studying, but also letting yourself off the hook sometimes. so just relax and let yourself have fun sometimes. you will still get into a great school, and you won’t spend your entire high school career worrying about something that is ultimately out of your control anyway.
