Got accepted, but it's actually bad news for me

I got accepted into UC Berkeley, but the problem is the requirements. I had to finish organic chemistry 2 and organic chemistry 2 lab with at least a B- but due to financial hardship and some issues with disability, I had to drop the class. Would this automatically mean that my acceptance letter has been cancelled? My counselor said that I can ask for a deferment but I was researching and saw that UC’s dont usually do deferments.

Summer class?

I would contact admissions immediately and see what they say about your situation. No one here on CC can advise you since they will look at each individuals specific case. Call Monday morning. UC’s in general will not defer but again it is decided on a case by case basis.

Doschicos - they said I had to finish the classes by the end of spring also my school doesnt have the lab part during the summer. -.-

Gumbymom - I was going to contact them and tell them but I wouldnt even know where to start. I had to drop for a couple of reasons:

  1. I had issues with the professor who didnt look too kindly to students with diabilities and has a record of this at the school. (She made my school life hell and exacerbated my mental health issues).
  2. My family got into some financial issues and I had to get a full time job, which didnt agree with the school schedule. (Work was from 10-7, mon-fri and class was at 6:30-9:00 Monday/Wednesday and lab was Tuesdays at 2:00pm-7:00pm).

Where do I start telling them what happened? I have all the proof of what I’m going through but what are the chances that they’ll listen?

Again, I cannot tell you. You will need to talk to someone in admissions. You do have extenuating circumstances but only they can make a judgement call. Make sure you let them no you can document all the issues you have described.

Okay. Thank you.

I wouldn’t mention anything about professor interactions to Berkeley. I would probably just stick with 2) and see where you go from there.

@ProfessorPlum168 I will do that. Thank you.

So I just wanted to give an update:

I got into UCLA, UCB, and UCSD but decided to go with UCLA. I notified them of my drop, stating that I wasnt recieving the proper accommodations (I know it was suggested thati shouldnt mention it, but I met with my counselor and he said to tell them about the accommodations issue) and they said my admission still stands. I will still eventually need to take the classes I dropped as they are a requirement for the degree but not for the transfer. Thank you for your advice guys!

Congratulations! It’s great that UCLA is willing to work with you. Thanks for circling back to let folks know that you have a good outcome.

Please register with the UCLA disabilities office and work to get all the supports you need in place so you can succeed at UCLA. The sooner you get everything in place the better. Good luck!
