Got Accepted to UCSD winter..?

I just got admitted to the Revelle College for the winter session. I read that only 670 applicants were accepted to this college...
Anyways I'm wondering why winter? Am I a semi-reject? Lol..
Also I don't even remember How i ranked my colleges.. I randomly chose them because SD for me was a backup school as I was hoping for either LA or UCB.. did that have anything to do with it as well?

In the UCSD Comprehensive Review process, you fell a few points below the cutoff, so this is UCSD's way of still accepting you into their school.

^^ That's right. The college you select has nothing to do with it.

thank you for clearing that up :) i have no idea how i fall outside of their perimeters though. I had a 4.3 gpa with 2000 sat score...both higher averages then last year. And had numerous amounts of ECS. I guess the competition stepped up this year.

kykla - admission involves a formula with a variety of factors that represent different preferences and desired traits. It is not just GPA and SATs. See this to figure out your particular score assigned by admissions http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-general/608088-estimate-your-admissions-decision-ucsd.html

Ya i got into Warren for winter quarter as well. I don't think i will end up going there but rather to cal poly san luis obispo instead.

I am wondering the same thing. 4.15 uc gpa, 2170 SAT 1, 780 chem 800 math 2, and I got revelle winter. ***? I was sure I'd get in my impacted major.

So what does that mean? do I get to go to school fall semester? help anyone?

i have a friend that did this.

he attended a few community college courses just to keep himself from doing nothing (and to get some GE out of the way). he said other than that, it was pretty chill. technically, you could just take an extended summer break, if you want to think of it that way

The winter admit thing is completely random. A lottery.

R u sure it's a lottery that's completely random?

that makes no sense. you would lose applicants you really wanted if you happened to hit a regents with the random draw. Cal does something similar with spring admits and it is a way to give some more yes decisions, knowing there is a predictable number who will drop out after the first term and whose space can then be given over to people who otherwise would be rejected.

the choice for UCSD is either Fall (default, they say nothing special on the decision) or Winter, in which case the decision clearly says you are admitted to Winter.

So if you are admitted winter but enough drop from fall could you potentially get bumped up to fall?

If mine just says that I was admitted to my major, does that mean I would be part of the Fall Quarter? How do you know you got admitted to Winter Quarter?

It'll explicitly tell you if it's Winter Quarter, yummymango.

winter admits should just take community college classes, the only thing you are really missing out on by being a winter admit is making those friends early on.

sure it sucks, but if you really want to come to UCSD its easily within reach

The decision announcement says so. It is pretty clear. Unless they mention that, you are a fall admit.

Unlikely but I guess possible that they get fewer SIRs than they planned for. Don't count on it - plan your life to rack up some credits in a CC during fall so that you are not behind those that entered immediately.

I just was accepted for the winter 2010 class for Muir as a MicroBio major.

So what are the chances of someone being bumped up to the fall class of 2009?

Is there any way to appeal their decision or anything?

the only grounds for appeal are when you can find one of the factors where they did not give you the right points in their admissions formula, and then only if the change would result in a different admissions decision. They do not grant appeals when you are just asking them to look at the same facts and make a different decision, but will consider mistakes or unclear situations when you can throw more light on a legitimate additional point source. Not sure whether they ever do this for Winter->Fall as in their minds you got a yes decision. You would first need to call the admissions department, assuming you are prepared with the various categories where you think you should earn points, go over the score they assigned you and the cutoff for Fall admit, then see if you and they agree there is a situation that might warrant an appeal.
