Got Accepted!

Hey, I checked my status online today and got accepted as a transfer student for the Spring 2012 year!

: )

So I've signed up for the orientation on November 18th, I do have one question though that's been bothering me.

I'm planning on living on campus, which house would you recommend that does not require a meal plan? Or should I go with the meal plan?

I'm assuming the meal plan is per semester and not yearly right?

With that said, any suggestions, recommendations, as far as questions I should ask during the orientation?

Welcome to the Tribe!

Congratulations!

I don’t know how it works for transfers, but if you can sign up for housing now, do it.

You might not have much of a selection of on-campus housing, (it depends what becomes available and who’s in line ahead of you) so a meal plan may not be something you have a choice about. I personally would not get one (search other threads here) but if you are assigned to a hall where it is mandatory (all of those are good, by the way), you will have to.

But living on campus is absolutely the way to go being new at FSU.

What GPA did you have when you applied corbis?

@ parenttonoles - Thank You! : ) Any suggestions what the tribe likes? Perhaps what I should/shouldn’t participate in on campus etc…? Look out for who? when? where? why? lol.

@ Nolette - Thank you for your feedback much appreciated! I did do some searches on the forums, and like they’ve all suggested registering for housing is an absolutely must once you get accepted. I registered as soon as i found out I got accepted.

These are the dorms I selected Reynolds as my preferred, then Deviney, Dorman, Kellum and Smith. I believe my priority number is 267 something there, but for sure below the 300. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing lol. Maybe you or someone could tell me?

@ Thorts - Hey, I transferred from my CC with a 3.2 GPA : )

I have no idea what’s a good priority number for a mid-year transfer. The only housing you selected that requires a meal plan is your first choice. So if you get assigned there, you will have to get one. Just know that you will be committing to an expensive option that you would not have to get if you choose any other hall on your list. Reynolds is definitely the nicest of those you picked, and has the best location, but you have to decide if that’s worth spending a minimum of $1890 on food you probably won’t eat enough of to make it worthwhile.

Ah, thanks Nolette for your reply! Now I sorta wished I had reconsider my choices  oh well. You’re right, I don’t see how I’ll possibly be able to eat $1800.00+ of food per semester. That’s crazy!! ugh-

I think that’s a little over 100$/week, right? That’s not too bad for prepared meals, assuming you actually use it.

You probably can still go in and change your hall preferences if you really don’t want the meal plan. If you want to live in Reynolds, then you have to get it. I’m not sure you will even have any choice of halls though. Wherever they have a spot open is where they will put you. But just in case there are choices, make sure you have your accurate preferences listed.

The problem with the meal plan is that you tend to get sick of the same foods all the time, and if you bought the same amount of meals individually, it would cost about the same. Theoretically a meal plan should save you some money, but this one doesn’t. Why prepay for meals you might not want to eat?

You really don’t get a choice in hall placement as a Spring admit. You get spots in the dorms that open from people leaving (reaching an agreement with FSU Housing to get out of their contracts, or failing, or moving to a sorority/frat house or, in a rare case, graduating).

In all likelihood, you won’t get Reynolds. However, if you don’t want to be forced to buy a meal plan, you will need to change that choice (you can do it online I am pretty sure. Or call housing about it).

Thank you guys greatly for your feedback. I was able to update/change my hall selections/. : )

HALL PREFERENCES:

 1. Wildwood Hall
2. Salley Hall
3. McCollum Hall
4. Ragans Hall

And I totally get where you’re coming from, I hate eating the same thing over and over again. If I get sick of it at home, I think I’ll probably get sick of it at school too. :stuck_out_tongue:

How close is like a grocery store etc… to the campus?

Are students allowed to buy grocery materials to cook on campus and stuff? Or are you pretty much eating out?

I really dislike eating out, I’d much rather cook myself, I’m a health addict, so when it comes to cooking food, and eating healthy it’s a big deal for me.

So I noticed that I have to have proof of medical insurance if not I have to purchase the FSU coverage.

Should I do this before my orientation? [Nov 18th] This way I can register for classes during my orientation?

Also I apparently have to send proof of my immunization, have a clinician sign the forms, does this mean I have to have a “college physical” ?

Ugh… that’s all so confusing …

I thought Ragans and McCollum were for people that lived on campus already; you can’t apply for them as a new housing resident. Apparently I’m wrong? I’m pretty sure though that literally the only way you would get a spot in one of those two buildings is if someone graduated or moved out and you were somehow first in line.

Yes, you can cook on campus. There are kitchens in every building (in Wildwood, I think there was one on every floor. In the other dorms, I think it’s like 2 kitchens per building, one on the lower floors and one up higher) or in the apartments in every room.

There’s both a Winn-Dixie and a Publix directly on the FSU bus routes; Publix is probably easier to get to though although I honestly find them a bit more expensive than W-D, although very convenient compared to W-D.

From what I recall of my freshman paperwork procedures, we were required to either have the health insurance waiver on file or for us to pretty much have purchased the FSU insurance by Orientation in order to register for classes. I know a bunch of people that were worried about that at orientation.

As for the immunization records, all that required was for me to go to the county Health Department and get someone to verify the records. That at least was all I had to do.

Transfers are eligible for both freshman and upperclass housing. Ragans is easier to get into for Spring. When rooms open up for spring, most students already attending FSU have signed leases that they can’t get out of at that time of the year. McCollum leases are month to month, and so rooms become available year round.

Yes, you need immunizations and proof of insurance to register for classes, and the sooner you register the better. So get that done ASAP. And no you do not need a physical. Most students in-state just get a copy of immunizations from their high school, and this likely works for OOS students as well. Call your high school and see if they will fax a copy to your doctor so the office can quickly fill out the form and certify it for you. Your HS has a centralized list a your current provider may not have them all going back to infancy. Here is the FSU link for forms.http://www.healthcenter.fsu.edu/test/forms/Health%20Compliance%20Packet%202011.pdf For proof of insurance you just go online at the link they give you https://cfprd.oti.fsu.edu/dsa/HealthInsurance/and fill out the online form with coverage and company info.

McCollum is not month-to-month; Rogers is.

Last year in McCollum my roommate moved out at the end of the Fall semester (the rest of us found out when he didn’t show up for Spring) and I was never given a new roommate. I don’t know what to make of that- I’m guessing either he was still paying for housing or no one requested a room change and landed in his old spot.

I would say that Rogers and Ragans would be more likely than McCollum, since both house grad students/students that may graduate at the end of Fall in greater numbers than McCollum. There’s 555 spots in Ragans (I forget the number for Rogers) but less than 200 in McCollum.

This is of course not to say that you’re going to get any particular placement. Honestly, while you will likely get some housing, I would not expect to get one of the “nicer” dorms. Count it as a very nice surprise if you do.

Congratulations on getting accepted!

Halls in order of newness/niceness (I know those aren’t words) that do not require a meal plan:

Wildwood
Degraff
Salley
Kellum
Smith
Deviney
Dorman

The latter 4 are about $500 cheaper per semester than the suite style halls, so that’s something to consider as well. The community halls might be a good option for you since you’re moving in in the Spring. It’ll be a lot easier getting to know people. For cooking reasons, Wildwood and Degraff would be your best choices, as there is a kitchen on every floor to my knowledge. Salley only has a kitchen on the 5th and 7th floors.

Thank you all for your responses! I appreciate it! lol I’m not so lucky when it comes to getting “nice” things, so I wouldn’t be surprised as to where I get placed. Just as long as I’ve got someplace to stay I’ll be fine.

I choose the suit style houses just because I want to be comfortable while I stay at FSU. So hopefully I’ll be able to get a good place.

I’m glad to know that there are kitchens to be used. That will help out greatly!

Also, I’m going to try and contact my high school for my immunization records.

However; I don’t really have a doctor at the moment… So I’ll have to figure out another way to get the paper work approved huh?

As for the insurance, I don’t have medical insurance, though I have dental and vision, I’m sure that’s not what the school cares for. So I’ll have to purchase the insurance from FSU.

Do I have to pay right now for the insurance? Because I surly don’t have $1,400.00 on hand to pay right away. Or do I just have to sign up and when I attend next year It’ll be in effect? They’ll take the payment from my financial aid/scholarships/loans?

One thing about community style places I have a hard time adopting to people. So I’m hoping I don’t get placed into a community style dorm at hand.

It’s sorta difficult for me to meet people lol, I just want to focus on my school, get my studies done, and get out of there asap.

At the same time, I want to make the best of the experience, learn, and grow at a steady pace :stuck_out_tongue:

I just received notice from FSU about my FAFSA documentations, so I’m getting those all ready and set. Hopefully I can get all of these documentations done before orientation [ Nov 18]

A question about orientation.

As a transfer student how long does the orientation last? I know my orientation date will be on a Friday. Do I have to rent a hotel and stuff for the orientation? I remember a friend who went to USF orientation and it lasted two days! He had to find a place to stay at. I can’t imagine a orientation lasting such a long time!
