Got deferred from my Safety what??//BU, Vanderbilt, Tufts chances?

So I got deferred from Case Western Reserve University, which was supposed to be a safety school for me...the acceptance rate is 54% and I got into schools with rates similar to that!! I'm freaking out, does that mean I have a chance at these schools? I plan on majoring in psychology.

I'll rate you back, thanks! I'm just really scared whether or not I still have a chance at my others, I've already been accepted to UGA honors though.

I’m female btw

Ask your guidance counselor to review your application to Case to see if there is something that might be a problem that you haven’t noticed. Could be essays, could be something just communicated in a way that isn’t obvious to an admissions office, typos, etc. I’d do this next week, prior to the holidays and to submitting to other schools if possible (if you have already submitted, you can send a clarifying email if it would make sense). Other things that could keep you out include problems with your recommendations (your GC has written one and probably can see the others, I would ask straight up if there are any issues the GC is aware of with those).

Possibly Case somehow got the impression that they are your safety, too. Could have come across in an essay, in an interview, or from an outside source (um… GCs can blow it on this front if asked point blank by a college, which does happen). Or maybe Case had some other reason to think you would not attend if accepted… colleges do want to protect their yield.

And they did defer you, not reject you outright. Maybe they want to see how much you want to attend – if you have any new accomplishments since you applied (and through January, I would say), send their admissions an email with an update and ask them to consider the new info along with the rest of your application, and reiterate that you are really interested in Case and hope to be admitted.

intparent may be on to something. According to the CWRU Common Data Set, you fit the profile of a top 10-25% admittee. That doesn’t make it a lock, but something unexpected may have happened…

What’s your prospective major? How were your essays and recs?

Not sure why you’d get deferred by Case. Your scores, GPA, ECs are all super competitive, and your ECs definitely reflect a passion for neuroscience.

BU: 70%
Vanderbilt: 40%
Tufts: 50%
Haverford: 40%
Northeastern: 70%
W&M: 70%

Don’t fret- you’re a fantastic candidate for any school and you’ll do great wherever you end up.

Thanks guys, that is great advice!! If I review everything again do you think I’d still have a chance at the other schools on my list?

My essays were okay, and my recs should be at least 8/10.

I can chance you back.

ALSO: ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMPETITIVE SCHOOLS YOU THINK I HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT? LIKE EMORY?

Boston University- low match/safety
Vanderbilt- high match
Tufts, - high Match
Haverford, -idk
Northeastern, - low match/match
William and Mary- idk

Don’t worry
Case often defers people if they believe that they are not demonstrating interest and do not have any thoughts upon going to school there

Case has a reputation for not accepting people who may apply there as a safety. The rejected the valedictorian from my school last year because he hadn’t visited the school… given, he only lived like an hour from the campus, but the point is they place an emphasis on demonstrated interest. Did you at least sign up for their mailing list?

Tufts is kind of similar, so beware. But beyond that you look like a great applicant so I wouldn’t be too worried yet.

Also, kudos on having extra-curriculars that not only stand out but are so reflective of your interests and intended major. You’ve been able to channel your passion in a way that few people your age can and if Case couldn’t tell that, then it’s their loss.

The point is that you should have an experienced 3rd party review everything… I think you will have good results at some of your other schools IF your application doesn’t have any issues. But honestly, you may be too close to judge that. And your GC has insight into your recommendations, too. Go there on Monday. Print out your Case application and take it in.

You have great stats.

Regardless of Case’s decision, you’re nearly certain to get into more than one of the other schools on your list.

If I were you, with your stats, I’d take a shot at an Ivy and maybe Williams or Amherst. Maybe U Chicago or Duke.

Welcome to the club! Thought I would get into Case as well but got deferred :open_mouth:

Decision: DEFERRED

Applied to which school/college: This is where it might have gone wrong. For my first choice major I put down “Pre-med” even though it isn’t really a major, and I know that. My second choice major was biology.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2310 (single sitting, but took the SAT 3 times)
ACT: n/a
SAT II: 800 math 2, 740 chem, 800 bio molecular, 800 Chinese with listening
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Bio, 5 Stat
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: AP physics c, ap calc bc, ap psych, apes, ap econ.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): some departmental awards but that’s it.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): kind of lazy to list, but the usual: President of two clubs, research at local top university, some public speaking related activities, some medically related ec.
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community service: hospital, library special program, Ronald McDonald House, Chinese school TA, 300+ hours.
Summer Activities: research, 2x internships
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7-8?
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Bio teacher, hard to tell
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher, should be good
Counselor Rec: No idea, but she liked me
Additional Rec: Internship mentor, sounds good to me.
Interview: Went well to me lol

Other

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Mid size ultra-competitive public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: M
Income Bracket: don’t remember for now
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing signficant

Reflection

Strengths:
Weaknesses: “lack of interest”? applied on Nov. 2nd
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AS WELL LOL
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred ED: Brown.

General Comments: Still waiting for a college to go to haha.

OPEN FOR COMMENTS/SPECULATIONS/JOKES

Might look at Holy Cross very good school 1 hour from Boston. HC meets 100% demonstrated financial aid. IMO, Holy Cross has better academics than BU and Northeasterm.

Apply to Washu!! :)

<a href=“Case Western Reserve University Acceptance Rate | CollegeData”>http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=966</a> says that “level of applicant’s interest” is “important” at CWRU. If you did not show sufficient interest (however they define it), it is possible that they realized that you were applying there as a “safety” but are unlikely to attend if admitted.

You may want to ask on the CWRU forum section about what they consider to be showing interest. <a href=“Ways to show a high "level of applicant's interest" - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1626043-ways-to-show-a-high-level-of-applicants-interest-p1.html</a> may have more ideas on how to show interest.

However, if you have been admitted to Georgia, and Georgia is affordable, you have a safety, so stop freaking out.

Northeastern and BU are a match, vanderbilt is always a toss up as well as W&M and Tufts. Try and reapply to Case Western

You don’t “reapply” when you are deferred. Your application automatically goes into the regular decision pool. But as discussed above, you can send info on recent accomplishments and reiterate your interest.

I can’t believe you got deferred from Case! I think you have a solid chance at BU honors and William & Marry should be a low match aka easier to get into. I suggest applying to more colleges if you want a broader range of choices though, other than that good luck!
