So I was denied by NYU for the Fall of 2010. At the time I applied I was transferring in from a community college and only had one semester under my belt (Fall semester), I was told you need 30 credits to be considered competitive but applied anyways because my parents used to work there and its always been my dream. Basically, my HS grades were reallyyyyyy bad so I wont even mention them(my mind was in other places when I was in HS) but I did pretty good in college I was going full time and managed a 3.46 gpa for Fall. I have loads of extra curricular activities, and my essay was pretty awesome. They denied me because I did not have enough credits which I kind of expected. I would have given them my Spring grades but they didnt want to wait.

Anyways, I was planning to go to Fordham because I applied and was accepted into the LC campus. However, I have no credit history(my credit history is completely BLANK) and my parents did not want to co-sign for a student loan so I actually had to withdraw yesterday last minute. I am deciding to go off to the Americorps from this October till next July which means I wont be in school this year. Will my break from school for a year be looked down upon??? Its not like im just sitting home doing nothing...the Americorps is a program where you travel the country helping those in need and providing disaster relief, etc. I want to apply again this time they will have two semesters to judge me on (Fall 2009+Spring 2010) with a cumalitive gpa of 3.45. I know it still doesnt equal 30 credits but do you think my chances of getting accepted are higher now that I have an xtra semester to show? Or do you think they'll just deny me again for having less than 30 credits? Also do you think the Americorps program will look good??

FYI- NYU is VERY expensive and they give very poor financial aid so if you could not go to Fordham without a loan you certainly won’t be able to attend NYU. That might be more of a problem then your lack of 30 credits.

I know how much NYU is my parents used to work there. This is not a financial question. I asked about credits and my chances of getting in. Obviously I know I cannot go without a loan I’m going to be building my credit within the next year so that I don’t need a cosigner. Not that that’s really relevant. Only serious answers relating to my question please! Thank you.

I disagree. Without a co-signer you will most likely not be able to arrange financing to accept your NYU admittance even if you get one. Going to Amerricorp for a year is not a bad move. However, taking a year off and working for a non profit will not enhance your ability to get enough of a credit history to afford NYU without a co-signer.

You should take advantage of your community college and your State’s public college or uiversity system. Also with only one semester of community college taken your high school transcript will still have a lot of weight on your acceptance decision.

In other words what does one semester of community college make that big a diiference on your curriculae vitae that NYU should change their decision from not accepting you.

It sounds like the OP now has two semesters of CC work, which is a big help. But the GPA may not be high enough for a very selective university, and most of all, the loan issue is scary.

If NYU is your dreams school, then you should give them what they want and stop trying to get in with what is less than they are asking. Americorp is good, but why don’t you continue your studies for another semester, get very good grades then try again. you are setting yourself up to be rejected again. Even better, finish the community college and your chances of getting in is far superior.
And yes, money is a big concern, if you are 21 with no credit history, you will not get a loan on your own.
