How hard is it to get into NYU really?

I applied for Fall 2010 and got denied which doesnt really suprise me because I was only giving one semester of college for them to look at and even though I did well my HS grades were pretty bad. I am planning to continue my education at a community college and after another year there I am going to apply again. At this point I will have two years of college and even though my HS grades were bad and my SATs were just average I am hoping that because that was a long time ago and my college grades are much better they will be able to overlook that. By the time I apply for NYU again I would have been out of HS for atleast 3 maybe 4 years. I took one year off this year to do AmeriCorps which hopefully looks good too. Im just afraid that unless my GPA isnt like a perfect 4.0 and I dont have a shiit ton of extra-curricular and leadership activities and things like volunteering to feed the hungry in Ethiopia, and all these AP classes in HS like some of these kids do I wont be able to get in. When I apply for NYU again it will be my second time applying and know they are really selective...I can see myself applying again and again. Do you really need a perfect record or is that only how it seems? Do you or do you know anyone who had like a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA and still got in? I did a lot of extra curriculars in HS but not so much in college and I did not partake in a lot of leadership roles. What im doing right now--Americorps I think is the most impressive extra curricular I can put down. I can get pretty good grades but besides a good GPA and AmeriCorps I think my college record may look kinda boring. Although I do like to join clubs in school I never participate in leadership type things like student council and what not.

Also even though I got good grades in college my HS grades were a mess. I dont even know what my HS GPA was. Thats how much I cared about school. However, since HS as I have explained I have been doing much better in school and made the dean's list both semesters last time I was in college.

I know they will look at my HS transcript and I know my college transcripts will obviously count more but even though HS was so long ago do you think they will actually take it into consideration? And how do you think I fair at getting into NYU after another year of community college with like a 3.6 or 3.7 with a decent amount of extra curriculars and a year of AmeriCorps under my belt? My biggest fear is that even after applying again and doing another year of schooling I still wont get in. I really want to though its my dream school and my parents worked there when I was growing up in Brooklyn. I know a lot about the city (lived there my whole life) and the NYU culture, and what goes in behind the scenes but not much about the school academic wise besides the professors are top notch....

Is NYU one of those schools where they seem to impeccable standards and like you have to be perfect to get in but then you have a whole bunch of students that in reality are just average students and your like how did these kids even get here?

You can get a rough idea from a profile of a recent entering freshman class at <a href=“Research with Human Subjects”>Research with Human Subjects; sections C7 to C12. :)

You address a number of your weaknesses, all of which are easily fixable.

College GPA: Study harder, work harder, improve it.

Lack of extracurriculars: Find some, get involved, try more than 5, identify at least one, better two that you feel more passionate about, and get in the leadership.

SAT scores: Retake. You’d be surprised the number of kids who retake the test in freshman or sophomore year of school. It helps for some grad school apps (i.e. high SAT + GRE/GMAT), external scholarships, and will definitely help with transfer apps.

You aren’t in a hole you can’t climb out of. The only question is whether you’re willing to make some tough moves now to get yourself to a better place later.

thanks helldocks,
Im not worried about my gpa so much…it isnt that bad although id like to improve it some. It is like a 3.5 right now and Id like to get it to a 3.8. Of course a perfect 4.0 would be ideal but as someone who also works full time I also want to keep the goals realistic–so im setting it for a 3.8

I guess my question was are NYUs standards as perfect as they seem? Like with a 3.7 or 3.8, average extra curriculars, having done americorps for 10 months, bomb essay do you think i am a good candidate? Or would I have to be like a perfect students who did all APs in HS and is president of everything at my school?
It seems all the students there are like perfect over-achievers…(not that theres anything wrong with that). So im just wondering if it just SEEMS like that…or do you really have to be like a perfect student??

No, there are tons of kids here who aren’t like what you describe. With all you said, to me you would sound like a great candidate, but it depends on the program you’re applying for, the specs of the current student body in that program, and how hard the first admissions rep to read you app will go to bat for you when they’re making decisions.

Ok…thanks for the reassurance :)

I just sometimes feel my app may be empty compared to some of these other kids who have AP this and AP that. As I said before…I did bad in HS. Like really bad. But I also have not been in HS for 2 yrs and have since done a good year of college (deans list during both semesters), and a full americorps term. I hope they dont judge me too much on my HS grades…because I know they will still look at them.

Citygirl, I am almost exactly in your position right now, except that I will be starting college this fall. I really want to get into Stern, and will reapply as a transfer again in an year or two. My GPA has not been so good, mostly because I slacked off when I could have done much better.

Can anyone tell me whether or not I should retake the SAT, or is it not considered as much when applying as a transfer student? (I have a score of 1870)

There is actually a thread on here about someone asking the same thing. As a transfer student who will be out of HS for 4 maybe 5 yrs by the time they transfer will the SATs still count? You should take a look at it.

I am confident in the work I can do in college…I have also done AmeriCorps which is a good EC and have worked with different organizations doing many different and sometimes random things. I am just so worried about my HS grades. My SATs were HERENDOUS. My GPA (I dont even know what it was) was worse. The only good thing I did was involve myself in a lot of ECs inside and outside of school. I have reasoning for the bad grades in HS which I can explain but idk how much they will care. I also dont know how heavilly they will judge me on my HS transcript after being out of HS for so long.

My GPA is really low right now. I guess all I can do is really involve myself in activities (and things involving leadership, perhaps) the next two years and focus on getting a high GPA. I read around on the transfer thread, and from what I can gather, if you apply for the junior year, high school transcripts and gpa will barely matter. If applying for the sophomore year, high school transcripts and the college transcript will matter equally for the admission (as in 50-50).

Achiever10:
What transfer thread did you read this in?
Was that specifically for NYU?

Not sure sorry, I went through quite a few. Also, I will contact the NYU Admissions for a more specific idea of the transfer process. Will let you know :)
