Got off the waitlist-Can I send deposits to 2 schools?

I was waitlisted at several schools and accepted by Northwestern (where I sent my deposit). I just found out I got into Cornell off the waitlist, and they want me to make a semi-committment before they will send me an official acceptance. I am excited but really shocked and torn because I have come to love NU, but Cornell is awesome too and slightly more prestigious. Am I allowed to send a deposit to Cornell and then decide in the next few weeks where I'll actually go? Will either school revoke my acceptance if I do this?

You sent a deposit to Northwestern, while you were on the waitlist (this was ok).

Now you have heard from Cornell.

You must now decide whether you are going to Northwestern, or if you are going to tell them you are not attending because you got off the waitlist at Cornell (in this case you willl lose your deposit at northwestern).

If you are going to Cornell, then you need to send your deposit and state your intention to enroll and give up the Northwestern spot.

No, you cannot hold spots at both schools. Yes, both schools can and given the number of students waiting for spots this year, will rescind your admission for holding 2 spots (too many people waiting to fill the slots, so they can easily pass over someone who may be trying to play them).

How did you find out, why is it not official and what is the definition of a semi-commitment. With out an official acceptance, how do you know it's not a practical joke?

There's no way Cornell wants you to send a deposit before they've given you an official acceptance. What you need to do now is make your decision. If that decision is Cornell, send them a deposit as long as you've actually been accepted.
