GPA Calculation and Grade Trends for Transfers

Hi, I was wondering what my chances might be for FSU.

I'm in CC, and will be receiving my AA this spring. I started out college immature and stupid. I didn't go to class, didn't study, and generally didn't care. I have numerous W's and 3 F's from this period. Eventually I got myself together, switched majors (to Biology), and haven't looked back. The past 3 semesters have been straight A's, with one B. Barring some disaster, that trend will continue.

My CC calculates my GPA as a 3.14. This is without the F's, as they were replaced after I retook the courses. So my first question is: will FSU honor the grade forgiveness I was granted at CC? Or will they include the F's? (FWIW, I emailed FSU Admission about this question, but they never responded. I called this afternoon and was put on hold for ten minutes before hanging up)

Also, how will FSU look at all those W's?

How important is my grade trend? Will another strong semester of Biology and Chemistry allow them to ignore my terrible start?

Finally, if grade trends are important, should I wait until I have my AA (in spring) to apply for the following fall? Or will the delaying itself be too detrimental?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

I’d recommend calling them.

I think you can easily explain the turnaround, and I think that for transfers, they will accept the GPA and not add back the F’s, BUT… your GPA without them is still a problem. If you are older and more mature, if there was a gap and you came back to CC as a new person, you might have a shot. If you are just 20-21, and turned things around but could fall back to bad habits, it is hard to tell. Just work hard for this last year.

Since transfer applications for fall have all of summer to be considered, I might wait until you have spring grades and then apply for fall. You will have your grades in early May and there is plenty of time for a decision by August. That way you can really bring up the GPA to 3.2 or 3.3. That would help.

Thank you, sunnyflorida. I’m 21, but I did take a year off. Oddly, it was after two semesters of A’s. My 16 year old sister had a baby, so I moved home to help out. I transferred to the local CC and am finishing there.

It’s kind of funny that the thing that might hold me back isn’t the F’s, but the couple D+'s I can’t replace. I sat down and did the math the other day, and if I finish with straight A’s (doubtful with Calc, Gen Chem, and Bio. They’ll be a B or two in there somewhere) I’d have a 3.3 or so.

Thanks again!
