Hi I'm a sophomore at a pretty good business business school. My majors are finance and international business. My GPA might be around 3.2. I'm looking to take the next semester off and get a job/internship or just prepare for the summer internship. Is it possible to get a worthwhile intership with that GPA? I think most banks and firms look for a high GPA so I'm worried that 3.2 might be too low. Comments?

the only internships/jobs where a high GPA is necessary are IB and Consulting, and assuming you dont go to a target school (Ivy or something of that caliber), you probably wouldnt get an internship anyway (even with a 4.0) so in answering your question, no it would matter if your GPA is 3.2.

4.0 from non-targets can get IB and Consulting internships.

not the bulgebrackets or the top consulting firms like BCG and Mckinsey. They just want the students (especially athletes) with degrees from prestigious schools AND a 4.0GPA(especially for consulting). Maybe different if the applicant is a minority though..

Leo187 you are a college student with no background on the subject. I know students from non-targets who are White males without an athletic background who got into Bulge Bracket IB. Sure they are a very small percentage, but stop being such a pessimist.

I'm not being pessimistic, its a reality. The bulge brackets+consulting firms get a boat-load of resumes (way more than the amount of positions that need to be filled) and therefore they could choose the creme of the crop, and they use the school as one of the weeders. A 4.0 itself definently isn't enough to get the applicant the job.

You can work for a BB firm without a 4.0 and being from a non-target school and not knowing an MD. It's a small chance but not impossible. So don't say it's impossible.

Btw Truthat, which school do you attend?

I never said it's impossible.

Why do these firms want athletes?

Being an athlete at an ivy or a school of that caliber means that, along with book smarts, you have leadership skills, teamwork, etc. as well. So having intellect and soft skills learned from being an athlete is a plus to firms and in the business world.

And your not the half-starved nerd East Asian or Massachusetts white boy that IBs and Consulting Firms want to avoid if you were a college athlete.

soph. at NYU Stern

If your at Stern you can get internships, but you need to get that 3.2 to a 3.5 or even higher if you really want to dominate competition for prestigious jobs.

What if you were an engineering major at UC Berkeley. I'm planning on doing Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, and may want to go into Consulting or Finance. Since Berkeley Engineering is known as being a GPA killer, would having say a 3.5+ GPA make me competitive. Its very hard to get a 4.0 in a program like this.

They'll look at your resume for sure. Hell, you'll probably even get an interview.

competitive yes, but recruiting for ibanking is low there compared to many other colleges, with most students ending up in san fransisco at a office for a bulge bracket or a large local firm. But They are tring to woo banks over right now, doing their best to pamper the recruiters. And if that is now, hopefully things get better. Consulting there i have no clue

I know Bain puts on a lot of recruiting events on campus. I always here about seminars and presentations by them. I wonder why Ibanking is so low at Berkeley. Is it an east coast bias? Its not like Cal is lacking in academics.

Maybe Cal is lacking "greedy douchebags". ;)

Could it be a that maybe they think Berkeley students are too liberal. I know a lot of Ibanks have a very conservative atmosphere.
