If a student enters USC as an Econ, History or Political Science major and then decides they would like to be in the Business School first semester sophomore year, what is the GPA needed to transfer into the undergraduate business school? We are trying to decide how flexible the school is about students that may be undecided during the admissions process to transfer into a more competitive school like business or nursing.
I would call the departments or admissions and ask. Information here is going to be based on previous years and it can be kind of a moving target. It will make a difference if you are talking about international business or other business majors.
I think the Business School was overenrolled with the entering class of 2015-16. Students who started out in Business, or who transferred in after first semester, were OK. But those who waited until the end of freshman year were out of luck, no matter how high their GPA; there just wasn’t room. I don’t know if this happened last year.
I think there can be two issues with transferring into Nursing: possible overenrollment (so no room for new majors), but also difficulty catching up if you’ve missed some of the prerequisites.
My advice to my kid was to start out in the major that would be harder to get into later (in her case, International Business). She could have easily transferred out to History or Poli Sci / International Relations (in which she was also interested), but might have had trouble getting accepted into IB as a sophomore.
Econ at Carolina is offered in both the Business School and the College of Arts and Sciences. So maybe your child could apply for admission as an Econ major in the Business School, which would make it easy to transfer into any Business major except IB (there’s a lengthy application process for that specific major if you don’t enter it as a freshman). If Business isn’t a good fit after all, your child could easily transfer to History, Poli Sci, Econ major in Arts and Sciences, etc.
Agree with @scmom12 to call the Business and Nursing Schools for the most accurate info.
I have a D who is a recent grad from USC college of Nursing and agree with what was said above …it is a little tricky to transfer into the Nursing program as opposed to some other majors . The nursing major consists of a lower division (first 2 yrs) and an upper division ( junior and sr yrs which is mostly your clinical ). In order to be competitive when applying to upper division , one must have completed very specific prerequisites and the GPA of only those specific prerequisites is used in the application process . All prerequisites must be completed at the time of application which is sometime during sophomore year and to be competitive the student needs to have the highest GPA possible in those classes . Nursing is a very structured major so there’s not a lot of flexibility with it . They also can only take a limited number into upper division due to the limits on clinical groups, so it can be one of the most difficult majors to try to transfer into at most colleges.
