GPA v SAT

I've seen this question on almost every chances thread, so thought I'd start a new one for this question just to clear up any misunderstandings. What does UM weight more heavily: GPA/ grades, or SAT/ACT scores? For example, if student A) has a 3.9 GPA and 1950 SAT , while student B) has a 3.5 and 2100 SAT, who is more likely to get in? Let's also say that both have similar ECs. Just thought this would help a lot of people out...

Definitely grades trump SATs at UofM. 90% of UofM students graduated in the top 10% of their high school class. I know kids with exactly the stats you quoted that were 1-accepted with a 3.9 GPA (that's before UofM's recalc of gpa) and 1950 SAT and 2-rejected with a 3.5 and even higher than 2100 SAT). Both with impressive EC's. That's OOS. Don't know about in-state.

haha, well OOS is where I'd be applying from. I got that feeling too. I was talking to a UM student a few weeks ago, and she was accepted with a 1840 or so on her SAT. Don't know her GPA, but it must have been pretty high, cuz she was Asian too, which never exactly helps.

Actually, race, ethnicity, gender can no longer be taken into account in the admission process. So, being Asian should not be a factor.

"Definitely grades trump SATs at UofM. "

that's not entirely true. It depends on ur school. GPA means nothing when compared with each other from didfferent schools, but SATs does. SAT is the only thing that got me in U of M, and even into ross preadmit.
I had a GPA of 3.2 but 2280 (1530) SATs and 5s on 9 APs. the standardized tests got me in, not the GPA. UM knows my GPA was way deflated.
so it's all in context.

Bearcats were you OSS or instate?

I know it is hard for them to use GPA as a major factor, bc different high schools use different scales. But that's why I also wrote "grades," because they certainly look at those. "bearcats": you SAT was WAY into the top 25%, which is why they accepted you, I would imagine. When you are over 100 points above their mid. 50% range, they probably aren't going to say no. I know what you're saying though, different things work for different people. That's why I chose the sample scores that I did, however, because more people are applying with those scores that 2280s, so it would be a more reasonable assessment. Congrats though :)

OOS (10 char)...around top 30-40% of my class
