well the first semester is over and I have a gut feeling that I got 2 As, 2 Bs, and 2 Cs. Is it safe to assume that my GPA will be below a 3.0?

Many teachers give plus or minus grades which are weighted +.25 or -.25 except A. There is no A+/4.25. The highest you can get is 4.0.
Were all of your classes 3 credits? If so, you would have exactly 3.0
If you had the 2As, 2Bs and 2Cs you would have 4+4+3+3+2+2=18/6=3.0
If they are different amounts of credits you have to multiple each grade by the number of credits add them up and divide by the number of credits.

jebus

what classes did you take? which ones did you like?

cyber mom, I am having a little trouble using what you wrote to try and estimate my GPA. Is it possible you can help me out?

My classes are:
Biology I(3 hours)-B
Biology I Lab(1 hour)-B
Chemistry I(3 hours)-C
Chemistry I Lab(1 hour)-A
Precalculus(3 hours)-C
Psychology(3 hours)-A

I also took a FIG class worth 1 hour that was pass or fail and I passed.

None of these grades are final except for Biology.

As to nycollegedad.

I was ok with bio. Didn't find most of it interesting except for the parts that dealt with the medical field. Math is definitely not a strength of mine and therefore I didn't really enjoy. In addition the class atmosphere for that class made me feel like I was back in high school. I really enjoyed psychology and am thinking about taking it as a minor or maybe even a major. As to chemistry, I hated it with a passion that can not be described with civil words.

I'm starting to feel depressed because I might end up losing my 100% bright futures and medical school is now looking like something that is out of reach for the likes of me. I know its too early to toss in the towel but I'm not feeling that great right now. I'm going to have to get my act together next semester and hope for the best. Start studying early, take full advantage of office hours even if my teachers get sick of seeing me, find a tutor, and so on.

Hopefully all will turn out for the best but still even if I do change my path, my bright futures might still be gone for good.

in order to calculate you gpa..
a=4.O
A-=3.5
B+=3.25
B=3
B-=2.5
C+=2.25
C=2.0
C-=1.75

so then you multiply the number of credit hours by the number of points your grade was worth, example.. biology you get a B, so that equals 3, and the class was 3 credit hours so that gives you nine points. you do that for every class and then divide by the number of credits your taking.

FSU-UF you don't quite have the minus weighting correct.
A 4, A- 3.75, B+ 3.25, B 3, B- 2.75, C+ 2.25, C 2, C- 1.75

JEBUS if you have whole letter grades for the credits you said, I believe you would have a 2.857.
(I am not sure about the Pass/Fail FIG so I am ignoring that)
33 B + 13 B + 32 C + 14 A + 32 C + 34 A = 40/14 credits = 2.857

As far as Bright Futures... you have next semester and summer to pull up your GPA. Also, if you have at least a 2.75, you can still qualify for the 75% scholarship. Lastly, you have one chance to reinstate the scholarship once you get it back up to the 3.0 again.

So I still retain my 100% for next semester? and as long as I raise my GPA above 3.0 I will keep it?

Or will I only get 75% for next semester and attempt to raise my GPA above 3.0 in order to reinstate the 100% percent for fall?

You keep your 100% for Spring semester. If you are not able to get a 3.0 even after the summer (when you can appeal) but you still have at least a 2.75, you will get 75% in the Fall.

thank you. That was exactly what I needed to hear. Ill make sure to keep my GPA up next semester. I now have a better idea of what I am up against and should be able to handle it.

This link Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs
explains the renewal, reinstatement and restoration policies of the scholarship.

As long as you have at least 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of Spring Semester, you will be eligible for the 100% scholarship in the Fall without having to appeal after the Summer.

cybermom once again thank you. You just lifted a lot of stress off of me.

Thank you.

Glad to help. It sounds like you are trying very hard and just needed to get used to the level of work and organization/study skills expected at college. A lot of students get very distracted with the social scene and skip class, it sounds like that was not the case with you.

My friend's son at UCF lost his 75% Bright Futures even after attending summer school to try to boost his GPA. He now had to take out loans and get a job. Maybe next year he can try for restoration if he gets his act together.

Another consideration is limited access majors often have minimum GPA requirements. For example Business requires a 2.9 GPA currently. This is another motivating factor for increasing your GPA.

wait, so is an 89 and a 86 both worth 3.25? I hope not, because I want to get the most out of my grade, considering I have a solid 97 in psychology and 90 in AAlit but am borderline 88-89 for the rest of my classes except chemistry..which I am going to get an 82,that is if he doesn't curve. I mean I have an 89 in Precalculus and I would be upset to only get 3.25 instead of a 3.75 for having a measley 1 percent lower, which is essentially the equivalent of missing 1 or 2 problems on the final exam average in.

It depends on your professor. Check their syllabus for the percentage cut off and whether they give +/- or just whole grades.

FSU has probably the worst grading scale I can think of. Of course they're one of many school that employ this policy, but it's still horrible.

Yankee & Jebus- I took chemistry as well (with Monwar). I heard the professors curve a lot, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I too have heard that the chem department curves like crazy but that final left me feeling uneasy. I have yet to talk to anyone who walked out of that final and thinking they did well on it.

yes, they curved big time! I ended with an 'A' in chemistry.

One thing we found out the hard way is that while Bright Futures lets you use "transient student" classes in the summer (community college at home, for instance) to pull up your GPA, the university scholarships do not, they only count your "FSU GPA", so just keep that in mind. In other words, pull up your grades in the spring or stay at FSU for summer school! Also, Bright Futures does not round up, but truncates to get your 3.0.
