Hello all. I have not used this site since I was applying o college and now I’m a junior lol. But I’m very confused about grad school. Right now I’m majoring in Nutrition & Dietetics and I’m not sure what Masters to get. I also don’t know how the GRE works. What would be my chances if getting in? I have a 3.3 GPA and its only going to go up in the next two years. I’m also a non traditional student even though I’m 21 with no kids. I just have to work and go part time.
What master’s to get (if any) depends entirely on what you want to do.
If you want to be a registered dietitian nutritionist, you need to do a master’s program that will allow you to sit for the exam and become certified/licensed in that field. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) maintains a list of such programs here: http://www.eatrightpro.org/resources/acend/accredited-programs
But if you want to do something else, you may need a different master’s degree, or none at all.
The Educational Testing Service has a website all about the GRE (https://www.ets.org/gre). It’s similar to other standardized tests; you pay a fee to register for a sitting, and then take the exam. There’s an analytical writing part in which you have to write two essays on different topics. Then you’re presented with a series of multiple-choice in different areas (verbal and quantitative reasoning). The difference is that the GRE is taken on a computer; you can skip questions, change your answers and go back to review questions. You also get your verbal and quantitative scores immediately.
