Compromise is usually the best way for people to resolve a conflict. Throughout history, compromise has solved many problems and helped nations narrowly avoid drastic disasters such as nuclear warfare. In literature, there are numerous examples where a failure to compromise has resulted in tragedy. Although compromise may not work when there is a genuine difference of opinion about strongly held principles or ideas, it is still a versatile tool essential to both important and more trivial conflicts.

Throughout history, the United States witnessed many internal compromises within the nation. Small states such as New Jersey resolved the problem of representation with big states such as Virginia through the Great Compromise, which called for a bicameral legislature. Each state would have two senators in the Upper House, the Senate, but representation in the Lower House, the House of Representatives, would be determined based on population. The three-fifths compromise, authored by Henry Clay, who earned the nickname The Great Compromiser for also devising the Great Compromise, resolved differences between slave states and non-slave states, establishing that slaves would count as three-fifths of a person. In addition to resolving internal conflict within the United States, compromise has also helped resolve foreign conflicts. During John F. Kennedys administration, the Soviets installed missiles in Cuba directed towards the U.S. JFK responded by implementing a naval blocked around Cuba and compromising with the Soviet Union foreign minister, Mikhail Gorbachev. In exchange for a U.S. vow not to invade Cuba and attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro, the Soviet Union would withdraw all their missiles. Therefore, a nuclear crisis was avoided.
In William Goldings The Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Jack cannot compromise on their role and engage in a power struggle. The lost boys on the island split into two factions, with Jack acquiring a greater gathering. The refusal to compromise leads to animosity between the two groups, and Jacks failure to show restraint drastically increases tensions and hostility. Simon and Piggy, two boys loyal to Ralph, are killed by Jack and his followers. The lack of compromise clearly led to the demise of order on the island and the unnecessary deaths of two young boys.
The history of the United States clearly proves the effectiveness of compromise, and Goldings novel The Lord of the Flies demonstrates the disaster that can result from its absence. Compromise is undoubtedly the best way to resolve a conflict, with each side losing a little in order to reach a satisfactory agreement.
