Assignment:

Is perfection something to be admired or sought after? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Response:

Perfection is a concept that many a people have been chasing after for generations. It's only a theoretical concept, however, and cannot be achieved in reality. Why is it, then, that so many are after perfection, all in vain? Perhaps the reason human beings are made imperfect is because these imperfections shape our personality, and these idiosyncracies form the pillars of our character. Imperfection simply makes us human, and without these flaws, we would merely be robots, lacking persona and individualism. These can be seen through the characters in many literary works.

In Shakespeare's very popular play, Macbeth, the protoganist of the novel works under the King and owns the land of Cawdor. The character of Macbeth is considered a tragic hero, however, and hence has a fatal flaw which eventually causes his down fall. This fatal flaw is his over-leaping pride, or hubris. Macbeth's hopes are lifted when three supernatural creaters called witches in the play tell him that he will soon become King. Macbeth's hubris and his wife's propulsion get the better of him, and Macbeth murders King Duncan in his sleep. Plagued by what he has done, Macbeth is unable to sleep, and resents his previous actions. When the rest of the land finds out what he has done, they wage a war against Macbeth and his dictatorship. Macbeth is beheaded by Macduff, who's wife and children Macbeth had killed previously, and his governance comes to a down fall. Peace is again restored in the land.

Similarly, in the Japanese novel, Kokoro by Natsume Soseki, the unnamed narrator of the story meets a phlegmatic and staid man who he calls "Sensei" or "teacher". Sensei's character is extremely unique, and due to certain circumstances in his life, Sensei is misanthropic and lonely. He is driven by guilt due to his closest friend's committing suicide during their youth. Sensei appears to despise himself and all the world, and the psychological thriller delves into the depths of this enthralling character's mind, giving us a new outlook on the way he sees humanity.

Thus, it can be seen in the character's of Macbeth and Sensei that each of these works of literature would not be so captivating if it weren't for such interesting characters. The imperfections of such different characters are what make them marveling to us readers, and this concept can similarly be applied in daily life. If everyone were perfect, nobody would be different. Nobody would have faults or insecurities, and no one would have depth. Perfection is boring, and imperfections are what make us truly beautiful.

Without reading too deeply, this is a 4/6 at best. The key problem is that the two middle paragraphs have no analysis. They simply summarize the novels. Spend more time proving your thesis in each paragraph and you’ll improve your score.

Agree with CHD2013.

You haven’t answered the question.
