Prompt - Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power?
Conscience is a much more powerful motivator than money, fame or power. Conscience not only motivates people, many a times, it also gives them the strength to achieve what they truly feel is right. There are several historical and literary examples that support this.
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India, is one of the mist vivid examples of this. Gandhi had a very successful career as a lawyer in South Africa. he had no shortage of money. But inspite of this, he gave up his comfortable life, came to India and dedicated his entire life towards the cause of India’s independence. Gandhi’s life and his success truly illustrate how powerful one’s conscience can be.
JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series is another strong example.Throughout the series, Harry, the protagonist has many opportunities to join hands with Voldemort and doing this would give him both fame and immense power. however, in his heart, Harry knows what is right and risks his life in order to defeat the dark powers. Inspite of being a strong wizard, it is Harry’s conscience that gives him the extra edge and enables to him to defeat Voldemort.
Another historical example is that of Hitler. Even though what he did was very wrong, Hitler truly believed in his actions and that is why he almost succeeded in accomplishing his goal. Even though Hitler’s conscience led him in the wrong direction, it did prove to a very powerful motivator.
Thus , conscience – our inner voice that tells us what is right or wrong – is indeed a much more compelling force than our desire for fame, money or power.
