Prompt: Are people's lives the result of the choices they make?

The choices that we make directly determine the course of our lives. Based on these choices, we perceive the world differently, pursue different values and beliefs, and grow to be unique individuals. Furthermore, with the myriad of freedoms and opportunities afforded to us today, we also have the power to instantly change the direction of our lives based on the choices we make. We can see that people's lives are the result of their decisions illustrated in numerable examples in literature.*

As seen by Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, our futures will be shaped by the choices that we make. Scout is initially unwilling to be a feminine character because she believes it debases her value as a member of her community. Thus, she becomes a tomboy persona; she only dresses in jeans and shirts and decries women who submit to wearing "girly" dresses. However, after witnessing a few remarkable people who epitomize the ideals of femininity, she decides she will act like a lady. Again, her mental choice determines her future behavior--she becomes an exemplary woman. Clearly, her choice to become what she wanted to led her to become that aspiration.*

Further, we can also see that the choices we make predispose us to their consequences highlighted by the character of Hester Prynne in Scarlett Letter. Hester has been emblazoned with a "A" on her chest for committing adultery to remind others and herself of her sin. However, she is given a chance to remove the mark of social stigma off her chest but she refuses. She decides to not deny her past and to remember it with sagacity and courage. Hester quickly becomes a courageous, powerful, and strong woman as a result of that choice. Had she accepted that offer, she would not have this dramatic change in character.*

As seen by Hester Prynne's courageous decision and Scout Finch's choice to become a woman, the choices we make determine what we become in our lives. Many people believe that choices will have no influence on our future's but they do as evidenced by numerable examples in literature. As individuals with so many choices to make, we must judiciously and wisely make each one because they will shape our destinies.
