Grades and College Rescinding Acceptance

I hope someone can please help here with two questions that are intertwined...

My child is completing his freshman year after transferring spring semester to another school. His grades are A's and one B with one exception...he is failing one of his liberal arts classes (F on one exam and a D on the other). He never failed anything before and with weeks to go and only two assignments left, we are trying to figure out (and math is not my strength) how to determine what grades are needed to bring the final/course grade to a C. Is there a strategy to figure this out and if so, what might that be?

More importantly, can his transfer school (where he will be going for the next three years) rescind his acceptance if he fails this class (or gets a D)? I am reluctant to send a deposit for this other school as I'm concerned about losing it if they see his final grades and say "no thanks." I realize that his GPA for the entire year will include fall semester classes yet simply cannot determine how great the impact of one failing grade should he indeed end it with a D. Any insights greatly appreciated.

To figure this out, you need to know the weighting of all of the tests and assignments. Rather than trying to figure it out, I recommend your S immediately talk to his instructor about his situation and determine what he needs to do to pass the course. Has he been in to seek help and talk to the teacher earlier when he saw he was in trouble?

Policies vary by school, but yes, a school can rescind his admission if a student doesn’t pass all of the courses they stated they were taking on their application. Some schools even rescind if a student doesn’t keep up the level of grades they had when applying. You or your S should call the transfer school up and ask what their policy is and get some idea of what the possible repercussions are.
