Grandparent Waiver Information for Prospective & Current State University System Parents & Students

For those interested in the details. Note, in addition to a Grandparent being a resident of Florida, there are also test score requirements.

Achieve one of the following.
a. An SAT combined score no lower than the 89th national percentile on the
SAT. Though the term “national” appears in the statute, the intended
percentile corresponds to the “SAT User” percentile published by the
College Board. The current minimum combined score for a 2022-23 high
school graduate is 1330. The required score for a 2023-24 graduate is
1340.
b. An ACT score concordant to the required SAT score above, using the
latest published national concordance table developed jointly by the
College Board and ACT, Inc. A concordant ACT score of 29 may also
be used to qualify for both graduating classes listed above.
c. A Classic Learning Test (CLT) score concordant to the required SAT
score specified above, using the latest published scoring comparison
developed by Classic Learning Initiatives if a state university accepts the
CLT for admission purposes. As of 11/30/2022, no state university
currently accepts the Classic Learning Test for admission purposes.

Thank you. I know this is a relatively new program but does anyone know when students are notified if they have received the grandparent waiver? I am assuming there is a lag between acceptance and notification?

Hopefully someone that’s going through the process can give you an answer. I’m assuming it’s about the same time frame as normal residency classification, it will take a few months, but before the May/June.

Thank you for your response. I would hope they would notify earlier than that!

There really is just no way to know. The first ones will be given out fairly quickly after decisions. After that it will depend on how many more the state tells us to award and when they tell us the final number. Last year the 2nd week after school started we received more and awarded those - that was a surprise to everyone.

Oh, wow! That surprises me, too! Sorry to be a bother, but when you say “fairly quickly after decisions”, do you mean days or weeks, months? Thanks so much for any insight you can give.

Last year it was about 2 weeks after decision that the first group went out.

Does someone know if I need to enroll first ( pay the non refundable deposit) or just by submitting the application it is ok??

At the UF page it says:
Eligibility Requirements for the Grandparent Waiver

*** Submit a freshman application as a full-time undergraduate student for the summer or fall term immediately following high school graduation.**

However I found this…and I’m confused, do we need to enroll as soon we have our results? and if I did not get the waiver and can not go because OOS tuition? can I give up UF without repercussion??

…also stipulated that the schools allocate the grandparent waivers on a first come, first served basis . Therefore, International College Counselors recommends **applying to each school as early as possible (along with any required documentation such as a Student Self-Reported Academic Record), submitting the waiver as soon as you submit your application, and paying your deposit as soon as you learn you’ve been admitted .

Thanks,

Interesting question. I think you are asking if it is a requirement to first enroll to be considered for the previously applied for grandparent waiver? I would also like to know the answer to that. I assumed the first come rule would apply to the date at which it was applied for, but now you have made me question this. Thanks for bringing up the question.

Yes. Because I guess there is a big difference btw eligibility to apply and awarding…

Some places i found this…

The grandparent waiver will be awarded according to the following guidance.

  1. USF has been allocated 34 grandparent waivers for the 2023-24 incoming first-year class.

  2. Admitted Students will be “eligible” for grandparent waivers as determined by date student has submitted all necessary documentation.

  3. Email both completed documents to grandparentwaiver@usf.edu

  4. “Eligible” students will be “awarded” a grandparent waiver on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum allocation of 34 based on the date a student pays the $200 Admissions deposit or submits a deposit fee waiver.

…however others i found this…

NOTE: Recipients of the Grandparent Waiver must submit a $200 Enrollment Deposit by the May 1 deposit deadline. Since UCF has a limited number of waivers to award, students who do not submit a $200 Enrollment Deposit by the deadline may have their Grandparent Waiver revoked.

But at UF I can’t find nothing…

The big problem is if not get the award and get stuck in OOs tuition… :frowning:

I really hope at UF would be the date applied for admission:)

I found other word at florida poly… considered?!?

Maybe …at some point they send you a “consideration for the award… “ than you need to be fast to pay the deposit…i like this way…hope the process works like this one…

The grandparent waiver will be awarded according to the following guidance.

  1. Florida Poly has been allocated 11 grandparent waivers for the 2022-23 incoming first-year class.
  2. Grandparent waivers will be considered for those admits on a first-come, first-served basis as determined by date student has submitted all necessary documentation.
  3. Email the completed application and supporting documents to admissions@floridapoly.edu
  4. Once considered for a grandparent waiver, grandparent waivers will be granted (awarded) on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum allocation of 11 based on the date a student pays the $200 Admissions deposit.

Sorry …but so confused, hope someone can help with this process …… thanks

Hi again. Are you able to answer the questions in this thread from Terra9 who is asking if enrollment is required (at UF) for the grandparent waiver (that has been previously applied for) to be actually awarded. Does the first come, first served mean when you apply for the waiver, or when you enroll. Or both.
Thanks in advance for any clarification. Looks like other Florida universities do require enrollment for the award of the waiver.

The enrollment deposit is not required to be awarded the tuition waiver. We expect to award all that we have before May 1st. After that day we will look to see who decided not to confirm enrollment and then start awarding to the next people on the list.

Great!! Thanks Melissa96 and Ehannah …I also waiting for UF answer my questions and let you both know…but makes more sense for me now. Thanks for the explanation.

Great info here! Question - I have an accepted student who applied for the grandparent waiver right after submitting his application. I know that if you meet all the requirements, waivers are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Is that ranking based on the date you applied for the waiver or the date that you enroll? In other words, does it hurt his chances of being granted the waiver if he holds off on actually enrolling? Thanks!

So sorry - just re-read the answer above and I think that answers my question.

Melissa96 The portal was updated for my son today to now say “Grandparents Waiver Approved”
Does that mean he was awarded a waiver? I am hoping yes, and not that it was not just being approved for evaluation.

Ok, I think I just answered my own question. A friend of our says they are waitlisted for the Waiver in the portal so looks like our son got it!!
