Just got a brochure from Granville Towers. I've heard of GT, some people love it, in fact it seems like most people do. I'm interested, but it seems like it might steal some of the true Carolina feel for a student. Any input out there?

Don't have first hand knowledge but a friend's daughter (more of your liberal non-preppy girl) lived in GT her freshman year and didn't like it. Her feeling was that more of the well-to-do kids lived there which also turned out to be the more greek oriented crowd (said practically every girl on her hall participated in sorority rush) which she was definitely not a part of. Like I said I have no facts, just heresay.

As PackMom said GT is the home for many before they go Greek. Heavily in-state with lots of long-time friends re-living and continuing high school social circles. It has it's own dining facilities and meal plan which precludes you from social interaction with others who don't live there.

Go granville if you're going to go Greek. Otherwise, you're just not going to fit in with the whole Polo, Lacoste, etc. scene.

Honestly, they aren't that great the only pro i can think of is having your car.

my boyfriend lived there his first two years... he didn't go Greek, and he felt that Granville was a rip off when he stayed there. Anywho, if you're planning on going greek as others have said, live in Granville. Also, if you like to party, live in Granville because you're in the center of all the fraternity-party action.

Like most people have said--the Granville location is definitely an advantage compared to South Campus housing, but not to North. In my opinion though, that's the only big advantage. The bathroom set up is nice (one bathroom for every two rooms), but the interior is generally kind of run-down and gross. The new south campus dorms have the same bathroom set up, but with bigger rooms, and are in MUCH better condition. Granville is nicer than the old south campus dorms though. Socially, Granville is very isolated. People at Granville largely tend to hang out only with other Granville people. It is very fratty and preppy, especially Granville West. It also tends to be loud, and alcohol rules are not enforced even a little bit. From what I've heard, the Agora (Granville cafeteria) is about the same as campus dining, but I don't have personal experience with it. If you are very into the Greek and Bar scenes, Granville is probably a great option for you, otherwise you could probably be happier and with just as good of a location at most of the dorms on north campus. South campus, while being farther (though there is very easy bus access) is very social and if you are in one of the new dorms, is even much nicer than Granville. Just depends on what you want and what your priorities are, really.

I actually logged in tonight just to post on this topic, and before I could start one I saw this.
I live in Granville now and I must say it is the low point of my carolina experience. The food here is decent, but the rooms are DISGUSTING. They are pretty small with a nasty brown on the walls and carpet that badly needs replacing. My room has smelled like a dirty diaper since I moved in and despite promising me carpet cleaning, it still hasn't happened even after I reminded them 3 times. They seem to forget that we are customers, and we chose to live here. My suggestion is to live on campus. My girlfriend is a freshman and has a really nice dorm on upper campus. They told her they are trying to move more freshmen up there so you have a better chance of getting it.

PS its not as preppy as everyone says. It is very social though

PPS feel free to email me with any questions- cwallace@unc.edu

Stay on campus, don't go near Granville.

onequestion,
Your response made me laugh out loud! The feedback for Granville appears, to me at least, to be overwhelmingly negative. I will follow your advice.
Thanks

lol glad to make you laugh. Good decision on your part, let us know where you're staying.
