I'm planning on making some of my own food in college. Are there any grocery stores near by (costco, shop rite, etc.) that I could bike to?

yea, there are a lot of options. The main supermarket here is Schnucks, and there’s one within walking/biking distance of campus. There are also a Trader Joes/Whole Foods/Target that you can get to via public transportation but that usually takes a lot longer and is kind of annoying.

Beyond actual grocery stores, one thing I did when I was a freshman was buy food at Bear Mart (it’s NOT Paws N Go. Stupid underclassmen and your weird names for things!).
They have a lot you might be thinking of.

I had a ton of extra meal points, so it was a way to blow them - it is overpriced, but if you have spare meal points its better than spending additional money at a grocery store.

Thanks for the responses. I really just need a place that’s close by and I can get chicken, meat, and maybe some frozen vegetables at a cheap price. Guess I’ll figure it out once I’m done there.

Haha, agree totally with Johnson about names.

To op; there really isn’t any where to cook any meals that like that. Vegetable are doable in the community kitchen, but I’ve never heard of or seen anyone in the dorms make a meal with meat from scratch.

Well, you still have all those meal points to use- so you might as well use them instead of letting them go to waste.

marcdvl: I have a george foreman grill, so I would just need an outlet to cook the chicken. it’s pretty easy.
justin: I’m going for the silver plan to save money and I’m pretty sure I won’t have any points left over.

When I was a freshman, on that plan (or whatever it was called in '08), I still have several hundred points left over.
When I was a sophomore, on the bronze equivalent, I had a good 200 points leftover.

So you more than likely will have excess points, especially considering you plan on making a lot of your own food.

oh well i just did some basic calculations with the amount of points in the silver plan and how many points meals generally cost from when i visited and it seemed like i probably wouldn’t have many points left over. i eat a lot more than the average person.

That’s all well and good, but you may be underestimating how much much people, and especially their eating habits, tend to change in college.

This whole conversation is moot. If you feel the need to cook your own food on the south 40, every building has a kitchen and there are several grocery stores within walking distance (more by metro).
