I am interested in attending Georgia State and majoring in Film and Video. However, lately I've heard some negative things about the program and how it's all smoke and mirrors and undergraduates don't even get to use any of the state of the art technology. Is this true? How good is the program? Is it worth it?

I don’t have any experience with GSU’s film program, however…

Film and video is a very flimsy field. You should consider if you will be able to find a decently paying job after graduation giving the cost for your degree. If you want to go into journalism, University of Georgia’s journalism program is a top three program. Although, I wouldn’t recommend going into the field due to market saturation and low demand, I would consider applying to UGA’s program if you can’t see yourself doing anything except film and video.

If OOS is a possible option, University of Missouri at Columbia School of Journalism and Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism are also top journalism schools which may have some sort of film and video components.

Georgia Tech also has a computational media degree about which I have heard EXCELLENT things. In addition, Georgia Tech’s name value, alumni network and Atlanta location would enhance top level job prospects. GSU, although located in the heart of Atlanta, isn’t able to connect with local employers as easily. Though law and some public policy programs are exceptions.

Good luck! Go Panthers!
