Guaranteed Transfer on Disciplinary Probation

Last year I applied to Cornell University as a freshman and was given a Guaranteed Transfer Offer. I’m half-way through my first year at another school and am now in the process of transferring out to Cornell as well as applying to some other schools. A few weeks ago, I was put on disciplinary probation for underage alcohol intoxication. It was stupid and reckless and I have more than learned my lesson about the consequences of my actions.

I realize this is kind of a pointless question since there’s no way of really knowing, but can anybody give me any idea as to whether or not this will prevent them from accepting me? I realize the guarantee is more than likely void, but I’m going back and forth on what they’ll decide based on reevaluation of my case. Other than this infraction, my application is pretty decent; I have a 4.0 in my major (3.8 overall), a job at the veterinary hospital on campus, a research position at a microbiology lab and strong AP scores (5s in Human Geo, Lang, Lit, Calc, Bio and 4s in Physics 1 and 2). I’m not hopeful about the other schools I’m applying to (Columbia and Penn for biophysics were long shots to begin with), but I can’t stand the idea that my stupid stupid mistake could cost me Cornell.

You need to address this directly with your current institution and with Cornell. The people at those places are the only ones who can give you a straight answer about this.

@happymomof1 thank you, I am doing my best to be as open and proactive about this as possible. I did, of course, include a statement in the forms I filled out for Cornell as well as on the CommonApp for the other schools and am calling the transfer admissions office at Cornell tomorrow. Do you recommend anything else?

In case anyone else finds themselves in the same situation as me - I was among the first group of transfers to be accepted to the Cornell Class of 2020. Show what you’ve learned and move on, it’s human to make mistakes.

congratulations and thanks for the update!

I would have been surprised if Cornell looked upon one drinking infraction that negatively, they’re not BYU lol.

@philbegas Looking back now that my sanity has been somewhat restored, I would agree with you, but at the time it was pretty hard to think rationally hahah

Haha of course, that would be stressful for anyone./
