Guaranteed vs. Provisional

What exactly is the difference when the say "guaranteed admission to med school" and "provisional admission to med school?" Are programs that offer provisional acceptance worth attending?

hmm i have never actually seen the term "provisional" used but I would assume it would mean that you would have to meet certain requirements (mcat score, gpa, etc) before you were allowed to matriculate to medical school. The same goes for "guaranteed" admission. I'm sure that 100% or medical programs in the US have some type of GPA requirement. As long as you check the program requirments in detail, I think you should be fine with either one. Can you post a link?

Provisional means "provided or serving only for the time being" on dictionary.com. Notice how the provisional programs on the list say "Students must mantain a GPA of blah blah . . .etc" In my opinion "guaranteed" means that you will go to their medical school no matter what. "Provisional" would mean that it would depend on your performance as an undergraduate such as them having a "minimum GPA" for you to go to their medical school. So, provisional is worth it if you are sure that you will meet the requirements as an undergraduate and they don't have sky-high requirements.

Yea, but look at this one:

"University of Miami School of Medicine (UM) (HPME program; 6 year program) Guaranteed admission into the medical school. Applicants requires minimum SAT score of 1360, be in the top 10 percent of high school class, take SAT II by Jan. 15 of senior year in high school, must maintain a 3.2 science GPA and 3.4 cumulative GPA."

It says guaranteed admission but still requires a minimum GPA.

it might be that since it mentions high school in the same sentence the applicant should have that minimum GPA in hs and not as an undergrad?

except that it says maintain, how can you maintain your high school gpa when your are out of high school?

BTW, the info on that list is very outdated, I know for a fact that umiami requires that students maintain a 3.7 gpa as undergrads.

Most programs I've heard of require a certain GPA for acceptance into the medical school at the end of your first four years. Some programs don't require the MCAT, while others require a certain MCAT score for acceptance into the medical school.

I've never heard of one that didn't have any requirements and was a guarantee no matter what.

yes, all programs (ok 99.999% or them) definitely have a gpa requirement. If you find a program that doesn't, please post the link.
