Guide for dummies to getting into UF

All you UF students that are in right now. Could you provide some help?

What are deadlines...where and what to register...any advice on what to do/say to get UF attention.

anything would be appreciated :D

-Do not bother sending letters of recommendation, they DO NOT read them.

-Work VERY hard on you essay.

-Do NOT leave anything out of the extracurricular area.

-Do NOT stress.

i spent about 2 months revising/rewriting my essay before the deadline came.

turn in all your stuff by nov 1 and you’re set.

However, if you are pretty sure you would go to UF if you got accepted and you want on campus housing, turn in your application ASAP! The earlier you send it in, the earlier you can get housing information and better chances on getting the housing you want.

that too. if you start now and turn in your ap by the end of september, you’ll be fine though.

not even 30% of people who applied for housing are done applying until the end of october.

With 27,000 + applications I wonder how much they weigh EC’s when the entire application is online.

Essay Topic

In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service.

This is the essay topic.
Would you recommend me writing about how joining my collegiate high school and having the possibility of obtaining an A.A. before I graduate is the best opportunity for a low income student a good topic?

Or should I narrate my first time going to a sports game, and how I knew the environment would be a great place to start a career.

You can use the essay pretty much any way you want to.

consider how either of those topics relates to your future college experience or your role as a student at UF. its less about you and your goals in life than it is about how you plan to succeed in college.

on the whole, they are more interested in making students into worldly, educated leaders in society than they are making engineers and accountants. if you can emphasize your potential to be that kind of person, you may have better results than simply discussing how you want to be an accountant.

that is at least my impression from having heard from a number of representatives in admissions and preview.

i probably went through about 4 different topics before i settled on one, and i probably would have kept restarting if not for the deadline.

on the flip side, people write completely off topic essays all the time just to show off. these are usually for LA schools, but a good essay is a good essay, and if it shows off why you’re a good candidate, you look like a good candidate.

Okay, sounds good to me.

I’ll try to emphasize that.
Thanks for your help guys.

If you mind me asking and comfortable sharing, what did you write your essay about?

my leadership responsibilities from being in a band with some friends and how i’d like to continue playing music on the side in gainesville, thereby contributing to the culture and community on campus.

i think the idea was great, but in retrospect the execution could have been better. not one of my better piece :</p>

I wouldn’t say the essay or anything beyond GPA, SAT/ACT, course load make any difference whatsoever, with the exception of a select few that happen to be on the fence. If you can, put everything you have into your SAT or bumping up your GPA in any way possible.

And if you’re a senior, just cross your fingers and hope because not much can be done IMO

based on OP’s chance thread essay could be a consideration. but in general, +1 for the above post.

I was speaking more in terms of the general population of prospective students, rather than this individual poster.

If I can raise my gpa one more point to 3.5 or even higher, get my SAT score up to the 1900+ range (im studying everyday) and get a solid essay with a rec from a well known economics professor, what do you think the chances would be?

like 75%? 0%?

posted in your chances thread.

I toured today and an admissions officer told me when they look at your ACT/SAT scores, they put you in three sections: bottom 25%, middle 50%, and top 25%. She suggested not taking your standardized test scores again unless you feel you can jump to the next group. I for example, have a 29 ACT. In order to move to the highest 25%, I would need at least a 32 which I feel is out of my reach. I thought that was interesting.

As well, all academic electives, such as sociology and psychology will go towards your UF GPA.

Interesting info ufcollins. Thank you.

really? I never heard about that uf. great stuff!

i will be taking college psychology soon.

so accounting courses, or all business electives for my A.A. degree count towards my UF GPA? awesome!
