Guide to Housing at USC

I think the closest parking structure to Parkside is PSA, which is ~5 min walk, so parking shouldn’t be much of an issue if you submit the forms on time.

And if you don’t want to share a room, then Parkside would probably be perfect since you’d have a single room, but would still have suitemates who you’d get to know well. Parkside suites have their own bathrooms for each suite which are cleaned for you, but the only disadvantage to apartments is that there is no kitchen.

Is it true that Arts and Humanities dorm (with private bathroom) very hard to get?

Are parkside apartments filled with international students?

Or issit a mixture of Americans and international?

Is it hard to make friends on campus? I’ll be entering as a junior

My D entered as a 2nd semester sophomore & didn’t seem to have any trouble making a lot of friends on campus, especially if you live on/near campus. It’s important to attend events/activities and socialize. The USC faculty also emphasizes study groups, which are social & allow you to work together to master the material. My S had never had study groups in HS or before but did host them while at USC.

where is it better to live, New or North? i really don’t know which one to choose

@theblackmamba24 In terms of structure they are the same, and they even share the same lounge, so people consider it one whole building… However if you go to the housing programs website ([Housing Options - Residential Colleges](http://housing.usc.edu/HousingOptions/ResColleges.aspx)) you’ll find certain activities each place has, and maybe that’s what makes them slightly different.
Personally I would choose New over North because of the activities offered.

After you’ve submitted the housing application with the $45 fee, what is the deadline for paying the $800 contract confirmation fee?

When do we get our room assignments? I got my roommate request accepted around last week. When I go to the roommate selection in the application tab, it says

"Your application has been received by USC Housing. "

"Applicants will be assigned spaces by USC Housing and notified via e-mail that their assignment is now on line and ready for review based on timelines listed in our literature and available on-line. "

Around how long is the wait?

I think you find out about your assignment mid-May.

is New coed by floor or by hall?

another question: do i just need to have paid for my housing app by May 1st, or do i have to have selected a roommate by the 1st too?

I dont think so, though it would be better if you pay earlier

On the housing website, we are able to change our housing preferences order even after we pay.

How does this work if its first come first serve if we’re able to change our preferences?

First come first serve in regards to when the application was filled out and paid for. So if I applied February 1st, and your app was sent March 1st, they would take into consideration my choices first.

okay so I can’t find my roommate on the roommate search thing! does anybody else have this problem?

oh, okay, but what if I changed my housing prefernce after I paid?

you retain your spot in line. it’s by deposit date, not time you entered your choices

If you find a roommate, but both of you didn’t put the same housing preferences, how does that work?
Also, if you are an incoming freshman, and missed the May 1 deadline for applying for housing by one day (applied today), are you still likely to be able to get housing?

Housing update:

I emailed USC about my chances of getting a Birnkrant dorm, and they told me that basically anything before the end of March puts in a pretty good (not guaranteed though) position for getting Birnkrant/New-North. They expect the end of March to be the cut off date for Birnkrant and New-North.

Also, you guys should know that they also told me the date they use when assigning housing is NOT the deposit date. It’s the date when they applied. I told them my roommate applied 3/21 but paid mid-April, and they said they’d use the application date.

^Apply for what, housing? So its based on the date of the housing application fee, not the $300 SIR deposit.
